He can be backup no problem. We need to ditch Mrazek and Campbell isn't a starter so there is a larger issue here. That said the answer to your question is Yes

Will Kallgren be the full time backup next season or will the Leafs go looking for another goalie to be the backup?

thats an excellent question

so excellent that it needs to be added to the all time greatest excellent questions top 10 list

Petr Mrazek is signed for several more seasons at a considerable hit, they may not have much of a choice in the matter considering how little they will have to work with. It’s not even certain that Jack Campbell is going to be back next season, even still, I don’t feel that he’s good enough to be a starting goaltender that can play 60 games and offer a complete reliability. For the past four months his save percentage has been sub .900% Just like Petr Mrazek and Kallgren.

It’s not even next season that concerns me, it’s this postseason that really has me worried due to their questionable goaltending.

At the end of the day, signing Petr Mrazek was a huge mistake knowing his past history with being injury prone. Not that it matters, even when he’s playing, it’s not like he’s offered any consistent goaltending. Consistently trash goaltending maybe.

I just hope Jack Campbell can hold the fort in the playoffs and that maybe they can figure out their goaltending situation next season, but if they are going with Petr Mrazek and Kallgren next season, then it’s going to be an undoubtedly long season.

IMO he should be. He's got good athleticism and size and he seems to have decent puck tracking as well. His main flaw is rebound control but if he can get that under control I don't see why he can't be a good backup or even 1B.

I think he's fine as a back-up. We should really be making a push for Gibson this off season - the stats look poor, but he's still very much an elite goaltender and I'm confident he'll do well here.

We just need to off-load some dead cap in Muzzin, Mrazek

Absolutely not. We are not in a position right now where we can trust a sub .900 25-year old rookie with 10 games of NHL experience as a full time backup, especially when he is only .904 in the AHL. His AHL save percentage should be a fair bit higher than that, but it is not like he is Garret Sparks out there. He is closer to Kasimir Kaskisuo in a lot of ways actually.

On top of all of that, Kallgren is waiver exempt, which is a major plus for our depth considering how much we struggle to get goalies to clear. Between him, Woll, and Petruzzelli (assuming Scott continues to struggle with his health), we won't need to worry about goalie depth next year and all three will get ample playing time with the Marlies.

If we are changing our NHL tandem next year, it will come externally. Varlamov, Husso, Kuemper, Blackwood, Driedger, etc. I wouldn't count out a Campbell/Mrazek tandem if Campbell performs well enough though. In fact, short of Campbell proving he can be a long term starter or willing to keep the seat warm for Woll/Kallgren for 2023-2024, it is more likely Mrazek is here next year than Campbell. Mrazek is the 1B again and we look for a new 1A. We dump Mrazek in the 2023 offseason regardless of how he does, just like Muzzin.

Gibson hasn't looked like an elite goalie for years, and the last time he did, he still crapped the bed in the playoffs. Once Fleury's deal expires, he is going to be the 4th highest cap hit for a goalie in the league, and hasn't been anywhere close to that level for 4 seasons now (and was a below-average starter for the last 3).

It is not just the stats or the team in front of him. Those stats are his level of play. I don't know if it is injury or the mental toll of playing on subpar teams for probably the first time in his life, but he has not looked sharp for a very long time.

Even if Anaheim was willing to do a soft deal and take Mrazek, we are looking at 5 years of a very pricey deal on a guy who is far from a sure bet. If Gibson continues to be what he has been, we are looking at a contract that is practically unmoveable... And certainly a lot more difficult than finding teams to take on two years of Mrazek or Muzzin (although the issue with Muzzin is his full NTC next year).

I hope not he hasn't impressed me at all I have said before but I think goaltending needs to be completely overhauled at every level NHL, AHL, ECHL all of it and it doesn't matter if they go out in round 1, win a cup, or anything in between

goaltending needs to be completely overhauled

the ONLY guy I would consider keeping is Woll and even he seems injury prone.

People talk about having to move a core piece, I disagree, if this team could get a save they would be unstoppable.

That'sd not a core issue, that's a goalie issue so make them unstoppable

get them a REAL goalie

Gibson has been on a shit Ducks team for years.

There is a HUGE difference between a good goalie on a shit team

and a good team with a shit goalie

Gibson is the first one

Leafs are the second one

bring them together and watch what happens.

Question is premature, a lot will be answered during the playoffs.
Would anyone really be surprised if they trot out Campbell and Mrazek again?

He shouldn't be back up this year! He has a long way to go.
If Campbell can't control his rebounds he will not even be the back up. IMHO

Goaltending is the toughest position to fill. You rely on one starter so you sort of need to put all your monetary eggs in one basket so to speak. If you want a bonafide proven #1 keeper. That means your backup needs to be young, cheap, and good enough to be considered a potential future starter or at least provide stretches of #1 ability to cover injuries.

Is that Kallgren? We are going to find out down the stretch here. If he can acclimatize himself to the NHL game and show some game saving ability I’m willing to take a chance on him next year.

What happened to Joseph woll? He looked good in the few games he played earlier but I haven't heard about him in a while.

Anyways, goaltending is our biggest weakness. We need to find a reliable starter before we worry about backups. I'm not sold on Campbell or Mrazek.

I'm hoping Mrazek is dealt & either Campbell resigns or they bring in another starter.

Then have Kallgren, a cheap newly signed UFA, & potentially Woll compete for the backup position.

Roll that out with the best possible team upfront & address goaltending later if need be; all they need is a guy to be hot enough at the right time.

To he me Woll looked horrible. Sure he won but overall he didn't look like someone who was in control

As for Kallgren, he should be the 3rd goalie. Kind of like Hutchinson is

I think we are going to Robidas island him.

He's done. If he wants full dollar he will go quietly. He just isn't durable enough.

I think the question, unfortunately, around goaltending is open.

No doubt the Leafs are scouring leagues to mine the goaltending version of Bunting - and I have faith they can do it.

If Campbell succeeds and if the team succeeds, then the backup question becomes less important. Kallgren seems ok. Was hoping Woll would emerge.

Is it too early to hope there's something in Peksa?

He'll be dealt with a sweetener to get his contract off the books. There's almost zero chance he's going on LTIR, dudes 30.

To answer the question for the topic. I'd be surprised if Kallgren is the backup out of camp next year. He just hasn't been good enough so far to warrant it. I expect Campbell back with a snall raise on a short term deal.
