I think he takes a lot of grief but he’s still a very good player.
At the recent World Championships, he put the team on his back and was probably their most consistently good player throughout the tournament, including a clutch late goal in their elimination game to keep Canada alive.
His relatively bland persona doesn’t really resonate well in Toronto alongside more dynamic personalities like Matthews and Marner, so that’s a bit of a strike against him in such a hot hockey media market.
Finally, as the Captain in Toronto, his teams failed to go deep and when you have a bland guy who acts relatively bland on the ice and whose teams had bland results in the playoffs, he’s not going to inspire a lot of excitement and rabid fandom.
Ultimately it appears as if Toronto may have been a poor fit for him in terms of his legacy but time may be more kind to him over the long run.
