Tavares has been good for Toronto..underrated by the fan base I think..compared to their 3 other stars , he goes where it hurts and plays to win
He's the captain of the dud playoff performances where he has been horrid himself.

Unless he has a big playoff run this means absolutely nothing.

Good for him for being great this year, but again season means nothing. He hasn't even gone ppg in a playoffs here out of 6 seasons, for a guy paid like McDavid/Crosby, he has been a massive failure, especially considering all the talent surrounding him.

Agreed. Johnny boy turns into a potato in the playoffs. He was the worst captain in the league before having his captaincy removed.

Well, that's exactly my point... underappreciated by his own fan base haha

The foot speed usually stands out more in the playoffs, he looks pretty slow.

He's looked better this season than last but I suspect that a contract year will do that.

$5M for like 2-3 years is probably smart money, more than that and you'll likely regret it.

Answer is a definitive no. Another goal tonight as well
Instead of this fanfare, they could simply have said he is 10th in the goal scoring departement.

Just funny to see fans calling him washed when he would be the best player on a lot of those fans teams. And even if not, probably right with the best outside of a handful of teams. Great player

I do not think you think its funny at all but you are annoyed. Strange, posters always say they think its funny.

Being the best player on a lot of those teams is more debatable to say at least.

Yes good player with too much negativity the last few years.

Ironic coming from a Leafs fan that have won what exactly with the Matthews, Marner, Nylander core. Oh right 1 playoff round.
Congrats on your many cups. When’s the last time your team played a playoff game? Bash us all you want but yikes.

I mean, Tavares is a great player. Good players are guys like Cirelli or Kadri for random examples.
Having Cirelli or Kadri instead of Tavares probably would have done us a world of good in the playoffs over the past few years.

If fact I think if we signed Kadri for 6 and Hyman for 5 instead of JT for 11 (not to mention the extra money we could use for D since 11 mil now fills two forward slots instead of one) Toronto's playoff fortunes would have looked a lot different.

Prime JT was obviously a different caliber of player than Cirelli or Kadri but I think the latter two are more effective all around players since about 2020.

Tavares is pretty damn good this season though.

In around 8 years (when he's likely eligible) he'll be in (or soon thereafter.....barring injury). He'll reasonably sit:

Top 25 all time goals
Top 50 assists
Top 30 points

There are 6 people with 1300+ points that are not in the HHOF. What are you willing to bet that any of them don't get in?

Jagr (not yet eligible)
Crosby (not yet eligible)
Ovechkin (not yet eligible)
Thornton (not yet eligible)
Malkin (not yet eligible)
Kane (not yet eligible)

In all of these guys (and Tavares) favor as well is that they put up those points in a lower scoring era. It's always probably best to judge players on their era too.

Top 5 for points in the NHL since Tavares rookie year (16 seasons including this one):

1. Crosby
2. Kane
3. Ovi
4. Stamkos
5. Tavares

Tavares goal scoring is probably even more impressive.

Top goal scorers in hockey since he came into the league:

1. Ovi
2. Stamkos
3. Tavares
4. Crosby
5. Kane

Taking things a little further, by the end of the season, Tavares is going to rank in the top 5 for goals scored over the last 20 seasons despite not playing for 4 of them (behind just Ovi,Stammer, Crosby and Malkin)

NHL "adjusted for era" totals have him currently ranked 31st for goals and 40th for points all time. If he makes it to the 600/1300 level you are predicting, i'm not sure how it translates but its going to certainly be a top 20 offensive producer in history.

Considering those numbers, his peak (2x Hart nominee), junior dominance, international success and even a bit of unique acclaim with being the first "Exceptional status" player, hes pretty much a lock for the Hall and he still has a few years to go for a cup as well. Its all a matter of when he makes it in really as we could have more than a few great players retiring around then as well.

Can Tavares hit 500 goals this season? He needs to get 26 goals in 45 games so will probably have to wait till early next season.
I think he will hit 1100 points though (needs 23 more points to that milestone)
