The Stars cap situation is starting to get a little crazy. Going into at least 2029 they have:

Rants: $12M
Hintz: $8.45M
Johnston: $8.4
Oettinger: $8.25M
Miro: $8.45M
Esa: $5.25M
Total: $50.8M

After next season assuming they keep them all:

Harley should get paid big ($8ish?) as well as Robertson ($9ish?).

Let Marchment walk in 26-27 and Seguin walk in 27-28. Duchene and Benn will likely take nice cheap deals until they retire so whatever there. This is either brilliant and their core is set or theyre running into a wall quick.

26-27: $104 - 9 players making 75% (14 more players needed and $26.35M to work with)
27-28: $113.5 - 8 players making 59% (dropped Seguin)

Have to be some big moves in there right? 25-27 and 26-27 are going to be ultra tight until the obvious relief in 27-28. Obviously if you win a Cup or two, who cares, but this appears to be cutting it pretty tight.

He's doing great, but with the cap increases coming, pretty much anybody that locked in their core players for 8 x ~$8M deals over the last few years looks like a cap genius.

Benn's contract is up at the end of the year...so that's 9.5M that will be reduced. Plus Dadonov and Ceci won't be back. So that's another 5-6M.

Well the era of having luxury veterans like Marchment/Granlund/Dadonov sprinkled through the lines will certainly be coming to an end and they'll be transitioning from a depth model to a top-heavy structure. They'll do everything they can to get out of the Dumba contract in the offseason. Other moves may be necessary.

He might know something about Seguins injury that may allow for them to ltiretire him but I hope not. But even if they have to move a guy out like say Marchment in order to resign Harley they won’t have to pay draft picks because the cap has gone up so much. I think the Seth Jones trade proved that the days of paying to get rid of a guy like what Detroit did last offseason with Walman are over for now. They also would’ve had to re sign Stankoven

They currently have 67.8M on the books for 26-27 with only Harley, Robertson, and Marchment due new contracts and 43.2M+ to do it.

That is the math I went off of ($104M). $67.825 currently signed and then gave Harley $8 and Robertson $9, which sadly may be low. $84.825/$104M allocated there on 13 of 23 players.

I see what you think might be a problem, but it's hard to look at two years from now when you still have next year. Sooo many things can change from now until then. Benn may only sign a 1 year deal. Seguin could be LTI-Retired. etc.

I tossed it a Sabres thread, but trade Harley for their 2025 unprotected 1st and watch it turn out to be Schaefer. But obviously these next two years is the Stars big Cup window.

Potentially right and proving it with Miro out. Obv they'd be wise to keep both but if this keeps up, Harley gets more than $8 and 26-27 is even more of an issue.

Some avenues. Keep everyone and go super thin on depth for a year.

Why would Harley agree to a 1 year deal and wait to get paid after?
