I wonder how many people in this thread have seen him play live… based on my very limited opinion of the player, as I haven’t seen him live, he sounds like a 1D at the very least a solid 2D depending on how good the offense is. Solid athletic physical beast of a defenseman that has proven to be able to put up points in the past and is pacing 64 pts this season on the Coyotes. The weaknesses from what I read is that he’s not a particularly creative player and sometimes his decision making is questionable. It’s up to the reader to interpret how good he is based on that description. I’m excited to watch him tonight.

Top pair but not a #1. His injury history with 6 different major surgeries and only 1 healthy season in his 7 year career hurts his value. Hopefully he can find some health for the remainder of his 20's, but I don't expect to see him last into his 30's in this league with his history.

Lol @ people saying #4

Hes a good #2

Stop Lol he would be #2 behind Makar, geez people dont know Chychrun
He wouldn't be ahead of Devon Toews

I'd let argue over Byram sure but he's not playing ahead of Toews in Colorado. The guy just finished 8th in Norris voting and played top pairing minutes on a Stanley Cup winning team. Use YOUR head.

Toews is very underrated d-man. Agree with your statement. Still a very very good pick up by Ottawa.

How do you think Chychrun would have looked if he was put in that exact same position?

I think he's a fringe #1. 20-40 depending on the day.

The way people talk about #1 anything on this site though you'd think there only 10 of them in the league. The "true #1" discourse is so tiring.

The better way to ask the question is "Is Jakob Chychrun a franchise cornerstone all purpose #1 defesenman". If that's the kinda thing you're looking for.
The answer to that is obviously no I think. But he's not being paid like one. You're paying FA #4 D money for near #1 value on ice (when healthy). That's really good.

Nope. But Chychrun's best is behind say Torey Krug's best. How many people have ever called Krug a #1 or elite top pairing guy?

To be fair, I think his tenure in Ottawa will be the deciding factor to see if he’s more of a top pair, #1 or #3 type dman.

As of now I’d say he’s a top pair D.

He wouldn't be the #1 d-man on any other team in his (new) division aside from the Habs.

I'm not sure I'd take Morgan Rielly over him. At least, the current iteration of Morgan Rielly.

McAvoy, Dahlin, Ekblad, Hedman, Seider, no.

lol you know you're clueless when.

Hypotheticals don't interest me as much as Stanley cups.
So bias. so before last season was Brian Campbell better than Makar? hypocrit.

Chychrun is better than Toews. period. No single player on the Avs could carry Arizona to the playoffs let alone a cup. It's a team game.
