Is it still possible to draft someone like Datsyuk or Kaprizov in late rounds?

Technically yes, practically no. Just because of the current political climate with Russia.

You might hit on a guy playing high school hockey or dominating prep-hockey or something but teams have learned that the draft is fairly predictable. Every once in a while you'll get a player who falls to the second round for completely inexplicable reasons but that's about as far as it will go.

Habs fans were really weird about it, they came up with a disgustingly xenophobic chant for Demidov calling Russia a gulag (which was upvoted in their sub), the intent of which still eludes me. I sincerely doubt Demidov would love to hear that, so... why? Because mass murder = funny?

What the f*** are you even talking about lol

We were celebrating the fact that we snatched what could turn out to be the second best player in the draft, maybe even the best, I don't remember no chants of the sort

Most likely it comes from your imagination

The only way a player like that is going to last until the 5th, 6th or 7th round is if he has at least one major flaw.

Mark Stone was a hopelessly bad skater. Cam Atkinson and Jon Marchessault were laughably small.

I hate the Sens as Much as the next Guy but I assure you it ain't russophobia lol

Canada is without a doubt one of the most accepting country on Earth regarding multiculturalism
Do you really think the issues/concerns with Russia is due to intolerance with their culture?

I won't address the "one of the most accepting countr(ies) on Earth regarding multiculturalism" statement as I don't want to start a fight. But it's not due to being anti-Russian.

No I don't think so, what are you even on about?

Have you even read the thread, or are you reacting to the last comment?

Russophobes lol
The things you read...

Nobody has problems with Russian players

We have a problem with their autorities tho

Yes.

But it will come from the success and growth of the Olympics. The next Datsyuk and Kaprizov likely won't come from Russia. Not that Russia isn't producing great players (they are) but Because even the worst divisions in the mhl are scouted decently. It will come from a lesser nation that no one's paying much attention to and it will be some freak of nature in a lesser coached system. We've seen some pure athletes get drafted out of the u18A championships (Clara in net), and I think it's plausible we could see someone pop up in that from a non traditional hockey team like a Ukraine, Denmark, Poland, Belarus, Italy etc. Even an Asian country. Scouting isn't perfect. And scouts are going to miss. Look how many prospects get taken in their D2 D3 seasons.

Yes, I read the thread. I'm not cataloguing everyone's stance.

And yes, I'm reacting to the last comment. It's what the quote system is meant for. Happy to help!
