Makes sense...Slats is 75. Will be interesting watching this develop. Sather has been at the controls for a long time and he has created a very insular organization. Seems to scream more responsibility for Gorton and Drury but who knows.

Stay tuned

This not new news.

Brooks wrote about Sather remaining in his position through this season. Sather is not staying around forever. He will be 76 this September.

2/12/18

Jeff Gorton and Glen Sather stood side by side at the press conference on Thursday just as their signatures were side by side below the letter distributed the same day to season-ticket holders in which management stated its intent to focus on the future even if at the expense of a 2018 playoff berth.

And, The Post has learned, the two executives will remain side by side at the top of the Rangers’ hockey department through 2018-19, with Sather having agreed to extend his tenure on Broadway that began in June 2000 to a 19th year. The Last Lion of Winter will thus continue to counsel Gorton, who succeeded Sather as general manager on July 1, 2015.

Sather wasn't involved in the decision making process as president. Gorton runs the hockey team.

This has been in the works for a while. McKenzie acts like he is breaking news. Please.

Not news, but not necessarily something I am comfortable with at this time.

Sather gets what the Rangers are trying to do here. Don’t think for a minute he wasn’t instrumental in getting buy-in to this process.

Depending on who comes in, this not necessarily their baby and there’s a chance they have their own timetable and vision.

Obviously all of this is just speculation, but it is worth remembering.

Sather doesn’t scout young players (hasn’t for years) but you can be damn sure he had input on trades and free agent signings.

lol this is an odd response. this is definitely news. it is time, but very worried how Dolan is going to work with new president. he seems to have the utmost respect for slats and leaves him alone, unlike the Knicks.

Sather’s looked considerably older these last couple of years.

While 76 isn’t what it used to be, and most people Sather’s age look like 60-something year olds from 30 years ago, this kind of work is still a tall order when you hit those higher numbered birthdays.

Brooks: "Sather is not stepping down."

MacKenzie: "Sather is stepping down."

RangerBoy: "Brooks reported it first!!"

I think most people might be surprised to learn how active Sather actually is.

While he’s not necessarily in the day-to-day business, he’s regularly involved in the personnel meetings, planning meetings, etc. He asks questions, will definitely give his opinion on things, and serves as the conduit to Dolan.

He’s more or less hands-off, but he’s not a silent partner by any stretch.

Maybe Gorton becomes a President/GM double threat
Possibly

Would have to think with whatever new arrangement they give Drury more power though. Put up or shut up time with him.

They didn’t allow him to interview for that GM job in the summer, and with him being the GM for the US team coming up, he’ll be in demand

I doubt they’ll promote him over Gorton. That would be awkward on a number of levels and Drury hasn’t necessarily built up that kind of cache in his career to this point.

Not sure Graves is that guy either.

From an internal standpoint, I think Gorton has good odds.

I also wouldn’t totally rule out Schoenfeld as a candidate either.

I guess, but they just gave him control of Hartford recently though (past year or so), no?

One of the THN guys had a long interview with Gorton for a whole big thing about their rebuild and according to Gorton the decision to rebuild was reached by meeting with Sather and Dolan multiple times throughout last season where they’d sit down and go “do we have the pieces it takes to win?” And every time they all came up with a “no.” So while not an every day decision maker, he (and Dolan for that matter) are part of setting the course still
