Holloway too but Broberg is more intriguing.

Oilers are currently around 2.4 mil over the cap with Broberg and Holloway still needing a contract.

A team can offer-sheet Broberg a contract at 4.5 mil and the Oilers would be put in bad situation. If they let Broberg go at the price point then the Oilers would only get a 2nd round pick back.

Broberg handled himself well during the playoffs and is only 23 yrs old Left Shot Dman with size and skating. It wouldnt be much of a gamble for rebuilding teams like Calgary, Anaheim etc to make that offer and it wouldnt be out of spite as they can legitimately use a prospect and player like Broberg.

Don't you have to be arbitration eligible to receive an offer sheets??

One of the Pacific teams with cap should absolutely do it. Anaheim sadly doesn't have it's 2nd next year though.

4.5 is just a threshold for a 2nd round pick.

I doubt any rebuilding teams will want to use their 1st round pick but if there is a contending team out there then they can even offer Broberg something like a 5-6.8 mil contract as Broberg will likely be better than any late first round pick for a contender.

4.5-6.8 = 1st and 3rd round pick compensation.

Potentially, but I don't think so.

For one - we can go over the cap by 10% in the off-season, so we've got like 6 million in cushion. For two - ltir exists in the off-season and Kane literally missed half the SCF after being too injured to properly sit on the bench for several rounds, so the cushion is more like 11 million.

So... If you would like to pay first round picks and like 5 million for one of Holloway or Broberg?

If I was a contending team with space to do so then id definitely consider a 1st round, 3rd round pick for Broberg. That first will likely be traded at the deadline anyways and this way you get a young 23 yr old Dman rather than a rental player for it.

Yeah but what contending team just has 5 million in cap space they want to commit long term to a player they aren't sure will reliably command 5 million in cap?

In fact broberg hasn't made his NHL team out of camp once, despite us making room for him to do so several times. He was dynamite in the playoffs for sure - but I'd definitely not want to pay him 5 million. For reference that's literally what we paid for Henrique, Janmark and Brown.

Meanwhile the teams that have 5 million in cap space that they'd feel comfortable gambling on broberg wouldn't dare give up a first because that first could well end up being a lottery pick that's 10x the player Broberg is.

Until you get to that threshold - the Oilers would just match. Hence why no one ever really issues offer sheets unless they're in some petty feud for some reason.

Broberg really hasn't proven he's even a consistent NHL player.

But hypothetically you could maybe get him to sign a 1 year offer sheet that leaves your team open to walking away from the qualifying offer if he underperforms. Even something like a 1 year 3M would put Edmonton in a pretty awkward position.

Broberg played very well for a few games to end the season and when he got in the lineup in the playoffs, but he was viewed by many as a pretty big disappointment prior to that.

Would you pay him 4 million AAV for a 12 game sample size?

Sure why not if youre a rebuilding team. The offer sheet doesnt have to be long term.

Thats an easy gamble for a rebuilding team with lots cap space and draft picks.

Offer sheets don't happen because it generally opens teams up to revenge offer sheets.

you have to have your own pick in place as well, which presently takes half the league out of contention.

Then, you have to consider that he's taking playing time away from prospects currently in place.

4 million is an awful lot of cap space and sets the bar for the next offer as well.

There's lots of reason it doesn't happen.

Oilers also only have an 85 million cap ...they have 3 million of dead money with Campbell and Neal.

Came here to say this Broberg is still a project and no one even knows if he can become a reliable top 4 top of guy.

Which is exactly why a team like Calgary should think about an offersheet. Their LD to put it bluntly is bad. Best case scenario you get a young potential top 4 LD in the mix or you mess up the Oilers cap. Worst case you waste a 2nd and let Broberg walk without a QO.

GMs don't really think and act this way as it breaks the code and seldom works out.

With who else is/was available in FA, I can't see the juice being worth the squeeze and making the Oilers mad.

Like why pay assets and start hard feelings for Broberg when you could have POJ for free? Or even Brannstrom or Boqvist.

Nah, you offer sheet a guy like Pinto who will be a 2C for the next 10 years.

Would Broberg prioritize money and possibly leave a team which nearly won a Cup for a team that's starting a rebuild?

On the Calgary side, you do risk some internal strife. If you're willing to give Broberg 4.5 mil with a limited resumé, you risk alienating your own RFAs (namely Coronato/Zary) if you suddenly try to play hard ball with them next summer. I'm just reminded of a story I heard about Buffalo's locker room turning sour after Ville Leino was lavished with a big contract. Some of the other vets were annoyed that had tough negotiations over their own deals and then suddenly they rewarded an outsider.

Don't you have to be good to get an offer sheet?

It was a different time but Detroit offer sheeted enforcer Troy Crowder back in the day; Crowder only had one full NHL season under his belt. CBA was different and Detroit had to provide compensation and it eventually went before an arbitrator. Devils requested Bob Probert while Detroit offered Dave Barr and Randy McKay. Arbitrator sided with Detroit, but McKay ended up being a useful player on two Cup teams. Crowder had injuries and only played in seven games as a Wing.

His value isnt anywhere near that.
Six months ago he was being called bustberg by his own fanbase.

Teams don’t just sign players to multi million dollar offersheets for fun. They need to be worth it. Both Broberg and Holloway have value to the Oilers but they are not 5m players.

Managers aren’t going to do that just to screw the Oilers over.

Plus players need to actually sign that offersheet
