I wanted the Leafs to take a look at Montour when they were eliminated back in May. His running through a wall style seemed like just the ingredient to have, but the more the playoffs went on the more he looked like a guy who had gone through a wall. So long story short, I'm curious to find out like the OP is but I'm glad it's not my team that committed.

I agree with the consensus that he is not a 7 mil a year dman. He is good but he doesn't really do anything great.

He's not as good as that big season ....and not as bad as he was in the finals.
Panthers wont miss him. A good but totaly replaceable Dman

Pretty good player with lots of character. Can also be annoying af for the opponent. A bit of a higher risk - higher reward type with what he does on the ice.

I'm fairly confident to say contract wise the risk is not going to pay off for Seattle.

Some of these Panthers players are having huge outlier seasons and then they just fall off. Like Huberdeau.

Watch Reinhart go back to a 20-30 goal guy next season.
Reinhart won't score 57 goals next season (his shooting percentage was abnormally high), but I don't think he'll fall that hard. He has never been just a 20-30 goal guy for the Panthers, it's 30+ goals for all three seasons so far. He will get to play a lot with Barkov and PP1 again, so 30-40 goals at least if healthy. Also great defensive play.

Montour on the other hand... well, there's a reason why we kept Reinhart, but didn't want to overpay for Montour. Montour is not a bad defenseman, but not worth 7 mil. Same with Huby, he cost more than he was worth after that 115 point season, which is why the Tkatchuk trade happened. Reinhart on the other hand is a good deal even if his goal totals drop a bit.

I wanted him on the Sharks. Then I saw the deal he signed and was immediately relieved that someone else horribly overpaid.

did he have a big shoulder injury? seemed like he just wasnt 100% started to get his shit together in the 2nd half of the season. I see no reason to worry. he should be fine. dont think we have any more 70+ point seasons though but 50s is reasonable

If he had back to back 70 point seasons he may be a 10+ million dollar defensemen.

First 4 years of this contract if he averages 10 goals and 40 points it should be fine.

It's a pricey ufa contract but not enough top 4 defensemen so they will get overpaid and then you question are they overpaid if they all are making this much?

He's a 40-45pt dman on any other team aside from FLA. But in Seattle he will be on their #1 PP unit and it will be interesting to see if he can repeat last season. My guess is no. Expect a 20-25 pt drop off in his production.

He scored 33 points in 66 games last year, which is an average of 41 points over an 82 game season.

Are you suggesting that Montour is going to score between 16-21 points next season?

I think he's a better player the more ice time he gets. If he can score 40+ points and play up the minutes of a number 1 then his contract would be more than worth it. Also he is one of the better conditioned athletes I have ever seen. That triple overtime game he played against Carolina was a masterful performance. I don't think he'll repeat his 70 point season again but he will still be solid.

He’s a 40-50 point rover defenseman that can eat up minutes. Florida is going to miss the minutes he eats up more than the points.

His 22-23 season will be an outlier but he’s been a really good player when used right, ie on top power play

The biggest concern is if he will fully rebound from his 23 injury

Not a great 5v5 defender, and most of his points came from pp. I guess Seattle already has their pp1 guy on Dunn + Montour is 30 already, so I'm not predicting good future for this contract.
