Unless the Hawks really start helping this kid out, why would he want to stay. It's a dog and pony show right now and there's not much in the pipeline.

How is this even a question?

Mcdavid dominated year 2 and won all the major awards and followed it up with another Ross + Pearson

matthews, an overpayment even at the time, was pacing for around 100 points and had a ppg pace the year prior.

Due to teammates and himself, Bedard hasn’t eclipsed a ppg yet and might not this season either in a pretty high scoring environment. He is in bridge territory IMO, it makes sense from both sides. Something around 7-8 for 2 years. Otherwise you probably pay him 12 and hope (probably do) see him live up to it, but if bedard bridges he can get that 15m+ if he performs well.

NHL didn't do any of these things.... he was hyped up just as much as any rising star. maybe you just happened to pay more attention that year than previous years? Chicago really hasn't surrounded him with much talent and he;s got 102 points over 115gp. still only 19 years old. that's not bad at all.

look at Jack Hughes in his first 2 seasons he played 117 games and got like 52 points NJ was pretty bad at that time as well,

just wondering where exactly should he be? if he's never going to get there where should he be at right now to be even remotely close to being what they said he would be?

Just to clarify:
Bedard this season (D+2)
60th in PPG, 49th in points

D+2 Marner
43rd in PPG, 37th in points

Bedard would need to be ppg to be equal to that Marner.

Linemates are a big thing, but based on pure production..no 19y/o Bedard isn’t outproducing 19y/o Marner let alone 2 years ahead of what it was at the time.

Mitch Marner scored 61 points as a teenager. Bedard is up to 102 and counting.

One is a center who is the guy (only guy) worth a shit on his team. The other is Matthews winger. They aren’t very similar in style.

I mean my gut feeling is that McDavid is in a lot more commercials that I see, but not by much. Maybe you could argue that’s too many. To say he is none is strange to me.

not in his teens though, Marner was paired with Tavares which isn't bad either, but Nylander was Matthews winger back at that time.

I meant what he was come contract time as far as that goes. Two separate things. I may even have that timeline wrong too. I thought he had his breakout season with Matthews and then signed. Either way he had a 1C level center to play with.

If you want to compare him and Bedard and where they are at contract wise, things should be closer to the same. For example if Bedard moves to wing and the hawks sign a 1C for him to play next to, I would find using marner as a comp between contracts more valid.

Yeah Dubas got bent over trying to do his players a favour treating them like he didn't have 4 years of RFA control on them.

Marner and Matthews were worth their contracts.

The problem is every other team who had those types of guys was getting them much cheaper because they took proper advantage of the RFA system, and so Marner and Matthews weren't worth vastly MORE than their deals (which you need to win a cup)

Marner scored better relative to the league in his rookie season and didn’t play with Matthews in his rookie season, even on the powerplay. 🤔

Bedard is not even as good as rookie Marner, and you guys think it’s an insult to compare the two.

It’s not insulting. It’s just not comparable. One guy was a year older playing with several talented players. One guy isn’t. One guy is free to play wing. One guy isn’t.
 
Am I too old school if I don't believe in giving players massive overpayments and hope the player improves enough to be worth it? I think that that's very poor attitude in general. What gives you a drive to improve is that there is still something you can earn. If you're a 70 point player and get a 15mil AAV contract, why would you even bother working on becoming better? And more generally, what happened to RFA years being less valuable than UFA years?

Needless to say, a contract like this would be pure lunacy unless he scores like 200 points next season.
