All clearly ahead of him. He should convert to W.

I would think he no longer is.
Never was. This was a Toronto centric narrative. Amazing player probably top 10 even with his playoff resume.
He is not better than Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Makar, Mackinnon or Kucherov. Id take Quinn Hughes over him too and then there are a bunch of other players that its debatable.

The tier he is in for me is as follows. Rantanen, Pasternak, Kaprizov, Barkov, Eichel, Sid, M Tkachuk, Connor, Nylander, Heiskanen and Point.

Then there are several other players pushing up to that, that are younger and are coming.

Top 5 talent? Sure.

Top 5 playoff performer? Nope.
You think he is more talented than Mcdavid, Mackinnon, Kucherov, Draisaitl and Makar? No shot for me.

AM at his best is a goal scorer like Ovechkin minus the leadership, physical play and ring. AM may yet find success but now he's basically a guy with a great shot who no longer seems to have that great shot. Still very good but certainly not top-five.

Nope. He needs to go on a playoff run where he shows up and leads Toronto to the finals before he gets to enter top 5 discussions. What he's done in the playoffs has eliminated him from the elite of the elite. He is a garbage playoff performer and has a horrible attitude.

Always had him at 6 at best on average (at his best, around 4 or 5). This season he was top 10-20. As of right now I'd say he's at the very bottom of the top 10 guys in the league

Memories are short.

Matthews was definitely top 5 for a few years there. But yeah this wasn’t a good enough season to keep him there IMO.
Which years? He hasnt been better than Mcdavid, Kucherov, Mackinnon or Draisaitl consistently at any point of his career. Makar has been elite for 6 years. When Matthews entered the league he wasnt better than Crosby.

Kucherov is quite easily in the 1st tier absolutely ridiculous to not have him there. he has 378 points over his last 3 seasons. He has lead the playoffs in scoring 3 times and has 171 points in 152 playoff games.

Factoring in down season, and playoff resume, he is a top 25 player today. Let’s see if I can come up with as many players better or at least more valuable to him (no caphit consideration)

In no order just random

1.Mcdavid
2.Drasaitl
3.Makar
4.Q.Hughes
5.N.MacKinnon
6.Heiskanen
7.Morrisey
8.hellebyuck
9.Kucherov
10.Point
11.K.Connor
12.Barkov
13.Tkachuk
14.Crosby
15.Kaprizov
16.Eichel
17.Pasternak
18.Dahlin
19.Rantanen

I’d have matthews at around 20-25
some of these names over AM are comical.

AM is a top 5 forward in the league, top 10 player, for sure.

Reading these lists I think he’s clearly gone from overrated to underrated. He’s not top 5 imo primarily because of his playoff performances but he’s clearly top 10. I’d like to see him healthy again but he’s won some Rockets, a Hart, and a Lindsay and he’s got some Selke votes.

Hall has scored 30 goals once, 40 goals never. Matthews literally has more 60 goal seasons than Hall has 30 goal seasons lmfao.
My point is that Matthews has bet been a top five player in the league. Hes not even the top player on his own team.
