Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

You really went through a lot of trouble typing this and are obviously extremely mad. What is it, 4 years in a row your team has been dumped by a team starting Calvin Pickard?

The big boys are playing now, time for the little ones to go to bed.

Fake “leaf” fan. Take your satire somewhere else.

Leafs struggles have been well documented and the fact that you’re shitting on him for being PPG and being a lot better defensively than a lot of those players you listed is hilarious.

Rent free, bud.
I think you mis-typed. I'm not extremely mad, but I am extremely correct.

Enjoy your more expensive, worse version of Kempe

If Matthews wasn’t hurt this wouldn’t be a thread

It’s clear to any human with eyeballs that work that his shot has disappeared. Last year and years prior he had the best shot in the world. Now it’s gone.

Hopefully whatever is ailing him he fixes it in the off-season with surgery or whatever
So what about every other playoff where hes under performed?

When did Auston Matthews have a "playoff run?"

What are you talking about?

He didn't. He's never had a good playoffs yet, and we're already 9 seasons into his career. But somehow we're supposed to expect it to randomly happen. At this point I'm just happy to see him compete hard for a couple of shifts while he attempts to chop the puck in half.

He's overrated by mainstream media who put him up there with Draisaitl/MacKinnon/Kucherov, sometimes even above those players. But he's probably actually underrated at this point by a lot of fans. His playoff disappearances are a joke at this point and he deserves criticism for that, but he's still in that 6th-10th best player in the world range.

He's been absolute garbage this whole Florida series, completely invisible offensively.
He's been outplayed by Brady Tkachuk in OTT series, and, now he's been severely outplayed by Barkov.

His entire game plan is to instigate 0 offense, allow Florida's 1st line free entry into the zone, than, he will try to make a cute finesse pass which gets turned over.

In the final 4 minutes, he had a chance to keep the puck hemmed in Florida's zone, instead he threw the puck to FLA D-man behind the net.
Skated back into his own zone, than turned the puck over a total of 4 times in the next 2 minutes.

A 23 goal pace is laughable for being paid the 2nd highest AV in the NHL, and, your main premise for that contract is being the best goal scorer in the NHL.
First time caller, long time listener.

Who has scored more goals since his first shift in the NHL?

I’ll hang up and listen for your reply.

When I watched the leafs, Marner looked like best player on the leafs this playoffs and has been this season. Matthews really should’ve signed an eight year contract instead of being greedy.

Yes, by fans who don’t understand hockey and base decisions strictly on goals and assists.

Carry on though…

Matthews was overrated, I'd say he isn't now. Might even say mildly underrated. He's clearly had injury issues, including right now. Doesn't totally excuse his playoff performances overall. I think he's the kind of player that teams can properly plan for in the playoffs in a way that the regular season doesn't allow for with different opponents every other day, plus he obviously doesn't like the tighter, more physical style of the playoffs. I'd still say he's a top ten player in the NHL, it's just on the lower end of the top ten.

Auston Matthews is a paper tiger.

For a 70 goal scorer, he doesn't score any goals when the pressure is on.
During the 4 nations cup, he wasn't even trying to score a goal against Canada, he kept deferring to Brady or missing the net.

He has 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games.
2 of those goals were complete flukes.

For being paid 13.5 Million, he is completely overrated, and can't overtake a game offensively like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kaprizov, McDavid, Kucherov, Rantanen, etc.

He's always failed to score when the pressure gets high.
25 Goals and 50 points in 60 career playoff games is a joke for someone paid 13.5M.
As well as 3 goals in his last 17 games, he has to be the most overrated player in the NHL.

More recently, he's trying to turn his game away from scoring, and, towards a defensive/Philip Danault type player.
How is a guy averaging 52 goals per 82 games overrated?

He averages 33 goals per 82 on the playoffs which is seemingly bad but the first question I'm asking is what is the typical scoring rate differential for players in general?

And I feel very dirty saying anything remotely in his defense as I hate the Leafs almost as much as I love tteokbokki. Excuse me while I go shower.

Matthews has never been alone in that crap, and picking this season when he clearly is not right and hasn't been able to shoot all season is dumb. He is getting chances he can't hit the net.

Is what it is I don't care as long as they keep winning.

People also discount he is the best two way center in the league
Matthews is not even close to best two way center. Laughably ridiculous.

He's been clearly playing hurt this entire season. When someone goes to Germany to get a second opinion on something its clear there is an issue.

I would not be surprised if he's been at 75-80% all year and the team is waiting until the offseason to get any further treatment done. He will be back to his 50 goal ways when he is healthy.

Austin Matthews is a funny case. He wouldn't get near the praise he gets if he wasn't a Leaf, but he wouldn't get near the crap he gets from fans if he wasn't a Leaf either.

Do you honestly believe a player who scored 69 goals while also being a Selke finalist was only praised to the level he was because he plays in Toronto… really.
