Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

He's got a full hardware case already, so not sure how he can be considered overrated. I think his goalscoring in the playoffs can be critiqued, but he brings other things to the table. Also, he has in fact battled injuries and that has affected his shot.

The guy is an incredible two-way player. He's won a Hart trophy and a Rocket Richard trophy. Shame on whoever calls him overrated!

We're glad to have him.

Auston Matthews is a paper tiger.

For a 70 goal scorer, he doesn't score any goals when the pressure is on.
During the 4 nations cup, he wasn't even trying to score a goal against Canada, he kept deferring to Brady or missing the net.

He has 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games.
2 of those goals were complete flukes.

For being paid 13.5 Million, he is completely overrated, and can't overtake a game offensively like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kaprizov, McDavid, Kucherov, Rantanen, etc.

He's always failed to score when the pressure gets high.
25 Goals and 50 points in 60 career playoff games is a joke for someone paid 13.5M.
As well as 3 goals in his last 17 games, he has to be the most overrated player in the NHL.

More recently, he's trying to turn his game away from scoring, and, towards a defensive/Philip Danault type player.

Jeez go easy on the guy, treating him like he’s Tim Stutzle or something 🤣

We all know Matthews is injured and it’s taken his shot away but he’s still a ppg in the playoffs this year with selke caliber defense and he kills penalties.

Matthews is a monster even if he’s not scoring goals

Another cherry picked stat used to start a thread. Conveniently uses a sample size that ignores half of a playoff run (cut off in round 2 wonder why round 1 was ignored) and then follows it up by ignoring half the production (assists) and then saying the goals were flukes.

No bias here at all folks.

Philip Danault offers the same defensive play. He gets paid 5 Million and isn't a top 50 player in the NHL.
Does Philip Danault regularly score 40+ goals a season?

Has Philip Danault ever had a 60, let alone 100+, point season?

Has Philip Danault ever won a Calder, a Hart, and 3 Rocket trophies?

Of course not.

I know what you're trying to say, but it's been argued to death that Matthews defensive game is top-notch, especially for such someone who's known as a mega goal scorer. When his skill sets are combined and tallied, Matthews is one of the top 10 players in the league.

I don't know what the deal is with his shooting in the playoffs but here's my guess:

He takes about 4 shots per game in both the regular season and in the playoffs so it's not about the number of attempts.

His shooting % drops from 15% to 9% from reg. season to playoffs.
I assume it's a factor of the other team playing tighter defensively and limiting his chances to more outside shots rather than those from in tight or in the slot.

This year in particular? I think he has an injury.
Better opponents playing their best quality hockey.

The injury excuse is used every season for Matthews.

Matthews has literally been outscored by nearly 100 players come playoff time, this has likely now gone up that his gpg has dropped even further this year. He is the 6th fastest to 400 goals in NHL history, an insane feat and yet 100 guys are outscoring him in his prime? Terrible.

The Leafs have never gotten truly pumped in any series, even in the Florida series which everyone cites as some lopsided beatdown, the Leafs lost 3 games by 1 goal (1 in OT) and 1 by 2 goals. Matthews went for 0 goals and 2 assists.

He has never gone gpg or had a massive series which he single handedly won
He has gone .5gpg (below his season average of .64gpg) 4/11 playoff series so far
He has exceeded his season .64 gpg in 1/11 playoff series
He has done all of this in his prime with an insanely talented team

His only way out is a cup win or insanely massive performances because he is one of the biggest disappointments in NHL playoff history.

Some people may hate him because he is a Leaf and that's its own bias, but he objectively has failed considering his contract/talent level/stacked offensive team.

You are discounting the World Juniors Bronze medal in 2016. He is a winner.

Don't forget he got swept in the first round overseas in swiss league

Matthews and his top-seeded Zurich Lions (31-12-1) were the victims of a shocking first-round playoff sweep to the hands of SC Bern (21-20-4) in the Swiss National League.

The signs have always been there :sarcasm:

He has 7 points in 7 games this playoffs, 4 in 5 last year, and 11 in 11 games and 9 in 7 games the two years prior.

What an absolute joke of a post.

Some quality rage bait right here.

It is when youre a top 5 paid player with top 5 player hype, and "lesser" players do better every playoff
I find it funny that you have “leafs and kings” in your profile yet you’re in every leafs thread bashing them.

Give me a list of “lesser” players - he’s been ppg or higher in 3 of the last 4 playoffs.

Check your facts, bud.

When you compare him to Drai/McDavid/Mac/Kucherov… sure. His playoffs are disappointing.

He is still a good playoff player and imo his defensive play in rnd 1 was the key to Toronto’s win. He mitigated a lot of prime scoring chances against and I dont think its a stretch to say that it would have at least been a 7-game series with a lesser player at C.

But sure, until he can do that in rnd 2 and 3, the expecttion will always be that he has more to offer (and he does and,
imo, will one day)

How many rocket richards, calders, etc does Philip Danault have. I swear you’re actually just t wording
It hurts dosen't it , that nobody respects the player you love so much...I know it hurts you that everybody knows that Phil Danault would put AM34 in a little box with one hand behind his back if they ever played again , like clockwork

Do non-Leafs fans actually think he's elite? Then yes, he is overrated.

I think most Leafs fans know he's a soft, prima donna, perennial loser. So he's not overrated from that perspective.

Then he shouldnt be making 13.25mil a year

First in goals overall (401) and goals at even strength (295) since entering the league. I think most fans view Matthews as a really, really good goal scorer.

I don’t think hes overrated.

I just think his style of play doesn’t mesh well with the low time, low space, tight checking style of the playoffs. Hes not a speed demon type player that can create something out of nothing like mackinnon and mcdavid, he’s much more opportunistic and those opportunities just aren’t there as often in the playoffs
