Is Auston Matthews One of the Most Overrated Players in Recent History?

Auston Matthews is a paper tiger.

For a 70 goal scorer, he doesn't score any goals when the pressure is on.
During the 4 nations cup, he wasn't even trying to score a goal against Canada, he kept deferring to Brady or missing the net.

He has 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games.
2 of those goals were complete flukes.

For being paid 13.5 Million, he is completely overrated, and can't overtake a game offensively like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, Kaprizov, McDavid, Kucherov, Rantanen, etc.

He's always failed to score when the pressure gets high.
25 Goals and 50 points in 60 career playoff games is a joke for someone paid 13.5M.
As well as 3 goals in his last 17 games, he has to be the most overrated player in the NHL.

More recently, he's trying to turn his game away from scoring, and, towards a defensive/Philip Danault type player.

I don't know what the deal is with his shooting in the playoffs but here's my guess:

He takes about 4 shots per game in both the regular season and in the playoffs so it's not about the number of attempts.

His shooting % drops from 15% to 9% from reg. season to playoffs.
I assume it's a factor of the other team playing tighter defensively and limiting his chances to more outside shots rather than those from in tight or in the slot.

This year in particular? I think he has an injury.

No. Not even remotely close.

People will complain about it being an excuse, have at it if you must, but Matthews’ biggest problem has been his injury history.

Okay, that's a pretty awful take by any measure.

Yes, we all know Matthews isn't scoring like he has in the past and we all know about his dreadful playoff scoring rate, but you're adding nothing new to the comments made by so many others so many times or those you yourself have recently made in another thread dedicated to Matthews.

So it is just that you feel you're not being heard enough there that you just had to start a whole new thread on the NHL forum? Please, do share.

We'll take him here in Buffalo.

His struggles come playoff time wouldn't serve as a detriment here.....

Matthews is far from overrated. In-fact, I believe a lot of people undervalue his defensive work, which is a huge part of what makes him great.

In-regards to his scoring, this has to be a bait post. The man has a Calder, a Hart, and 3....3! Maurice Trophies since 2016.

Philip Danault offers the same defensive play. He gets paid 5 Million and isn't a top 50 player in the NHL.

It is when youre a top 5 paid player with top 5 player hype, and "lesser" players do better every playoff

Don't think you realize just how good it would be if he were to maintain that pace.

If he were to go all the way to the end (lets say 21 total games for to make it easy) he would go:

6 goals, 18 points in 21 games.
His line outscoring the comp 21-3
60% on the dot
Top 5 for blocked shots among forwards

Believe it or not, I will take that statline over him having 3 more goals so far. Anyone rational would. Would go down as one of the greatest 2 way performances ever.

Hull scored 3 goals in his last 16 playoff games at age 38/39.

Matthews has scored 3 goals in his last 17 playoff games at age 25/26/27.

His playoff stats are abysmal relative to his contract/talent level and I say that as a Leafs fan.

Don't worry he's been injured for the last 3 years straight.
That's why he's scored 3 goals in his last 17 appearances.
