The last race at Aqueduct provided an essential life lesson into the game of inches. That is three horses across the wire, a dead heat involving Johnny V. and Castellano for first.

How would you have liked to have boxed the 4/5 or 4/8? The race finished 5/8 on top and 4 in third.

I swear, I didn't pen this article. :sarcasm:

I have been preaching this horse's brilliance to varying degrees for years and even decades. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. Correct the wrong! Let Mr. Nafzger enjoy the moment.

All of this history is evidence of how male lines evolve over time, and that continuing evolution was evident at the 2015 Breeders’ Cup. All branches of the Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector male lines are not created equal. This year, the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector provided three Breeders’ Cup winners, matched by the Sadler’s Wells branch of Northern Dancer.

In fact, it is probably about time we change the nomenclature from Fappiano to that of his son Unbridled, since all three of those winners are male-line descendants of Fappiano’s 1990 Kentucky Derby and Classic winning son. Despite the good work done by Fappiano’s sons Cryptoclearance, Quiet American, Roy, and Rubiano, Unbridled clearly has become a male-line founder in his own right, and with his outstanding 2015 Breeders’ Cup-winning descendants American Pharoah and Liam’s Map retiring to stud next year, the continued expansion of the Unbridled branch of Mr. Prospector is all but certain.

Interesting comment from Pletcher even thought the top three (a fourth if you include #7) were superior to the rest of the small field. He finished 1st, 2nd and 5th with his three entries in a seven-horse field.

Tommy Macho Pulls Away in Discovery 'Cap

"We felt like Ocean Knight was the horse to beat and was the main pace in the race, and we didn't want to allow him to walk the dog up front," Pletcher said. "So we felt like Tommy Macho's running style would hopefully—if he broke well—put him in a position to keep some pressure on the favorite."

Madefromlucky, one of three Pletcher entries in the seven-horse field, stalked and rallied late to finish second, followed by Ocean Knight, who held for third.

It was the first graded win for Tommy Macho, who finished third in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) last time out, when Madefromlucky finished seventh. A start prior, Tommy Macho finished seventh in Madefromlucky's victory in the West Virginia Derby (gr. II).

Baffert sends out Toews On Ice with his number two rider in Martin Garcia. Victor Espinoza won on this horse back in October while Garcia, who rode previously, was on another mount.

The horse is coming off two wins and is 2-for-4 lifetime. The horse is owned by Mike Pegram (Lookin At Lucky and Real Quiet among his most famous runners).

Toews On Ice will be in the mix if he's healthy, I think. See how he does over the winter. Looks like he can rate, but seemed like he had to run awfully hard to regain the lead. He's got the right people around him, that's for sure.

DEL MAR:

Doug O'Neill had a remarkable feat today at Del Mar: four straight wins with four different jockeys.

In the feature race, three guys named Stevens, Espinoza and Smith finished 1-2-3 and the $1 tri paid handsomely at about $120.

CHURCHILL:

Bombs have been figuring in many prices in the last few days and today was no exception including a $64.00 place price as part of a $9,000 trifecta. Earlier in the day, there was a $14,000+ tri.

Next up for Toews On Ice:

DEL MAR, Calif. – Toews On Ice, who scored his third straight stakes win in the Grade 3 Bob Hope last Saturday, likely will get a chance to stretch out in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity for 2-year-olds on Dec. 19, trainer Bob Baffert said Wednesday.

Kent Desormeaux, riding for his brother, wins the $1,000,000 Kentucky Derby prep race at Delta Downs. It was an ideally scripted ride for Desormeaux.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the Oct. 31 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and breaking from post nine in a 10-horse field for the 1 1/16-mile Jackpot, Exaggerator had no issue shifting over under jockey Kent Desormeaux to take over from early pacesetter Iron Dome, who clicked a quarter in :23.49 before yielding to the 4-5 favorite.

Exaggerator easily took over to run a half in :47.53 and three-quarters in 1:13.47, and although he was headed momentarily by Champagne Stakes (gr. I) runner-up Sunny Ridge headed into the far turn, he battled back through a 1:39.90 mile, finishing the 1 1/16-mile test in 1:46.48 on a sloppy track.

The winner returned $3.80, $2.60, and $2.20, while Sunny Ridge brought $4 and $3.20 a neck back in second. Harlan Punch settled for third ($5) and Found Money finished fourth, followed home by Whitmore, Forevamo, Texas Jambalaya, Memories of Winter, Cowboy Classic, and Iron Dome.

2016 Kentucky Derby futures were released today.

Nyquist, with the shortest price, and Toews On Ice have hockey connections.

If you want to follow the development of a horse flying under the radar, look at Synchrony. The male DNA is the phenomenal Tapit-Pulpit-A.P. Indy-Unbridled lineage but his dam is Brownie Points who was successful with firsts and seconds in 21 of 27 races.

Mohaymen has a similar male pedigree and Junior Alvarado currently riding.

KENTUCKY DERBY FUTURE WAGER POOL 1

Horse Odds
  • Airoforce 20-1
  • Annual Report 30-1
  • Brody's Cause 15-1

The Pizza Man returns to glory.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/96224/the-pizza-man-wins-hollywood-turf-cup

The Pizza Man, showing no ill effects from a busy schedule and a trip to the West Coast, feasted on the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIT) field Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, rallying wide and from far back to score easily in 2:31.75 for the 12 furlongs on a turf course rated firm at Del Mar. 

The winner paid $4.20, $2.80, and $2.60. Big John B returned $3.80 in both the place and show columns, and Power Foot paid $13.20 to show.

The Pizza Man, third in last year’s Hollywood Turf Cup, has won 15 of 26 career starts.

Oh, Laurel! What a track.

Race 9 Thursday:
  • $2.00 Exacta (7-13) Paid: $1,183.40
  • $2.00 Trifecta (7-13-3) Paid: $23,490.40
  • $1.00 Superfecta (7-13-3-9) Paid: $22,617.00
-----------------

Johnny V. and Mike Smith are at Churchill Friday.

Joel Rosario replaced Gary Stevens -- the latter flying in from California -- in a $300k race at Aqueduct and won stylishly. Apparently, Stevens was in New York for that one ride but removed due to being ill.

Jeremy Rose is back! Race 10 at Laurel. First ride since May. [result: finished fourth]

Successful day in New York!

Johnny V. won again with Tonalist. Short field, not unexpected.

But this is where the day got fun.

Forever Unbridled breaks through with a gutty ride by Johnny V. on a 9-2 shot. She was very overlooked by handicappers. $11.40 for a deuce. She needed a dose of good luck and got it today and won for the second time in 8 starts. She was pure athleticism and yet stately, what a beauty. "It looks like she got it by a couple of noses...," NYRA track announcer.

Both Derby prep races were ++.

NEW YORK: Junior Alvarado is an impressive rider. He may have a Derby horse! Mohaymen, as listed above, has sensational pedigree with Tapit-Pulpit-A.P. Indy-Unbridled. That horse paid $5.20 for a deuce? The gift of the year.

KENTUCKY: Airoforce, another Derby possibility, won in Kentucky. Mark Casse-trained. Julian Leparoux is at home in that circuit. One of Bob Baffert's two-year-olds came in second place.

CALIFORNIA: And the awesome Dortmund won in California. He was American Pharoah's stable mate and just may be prepared to be the best 4-year old horse in the country. Fantastic job by Bob Baffert to get this horse ready.

ILLINOIS:
Commissioner won, ridden by Florent Geroux. It is his final race. He is now retired.

With Martin Garcia riding for Baffert in Kentucky, there was a void on Dortmund in California. Stevens rode the horse and picked up a cool $9k for subbing.

NOVEMBER 28 (videos within each link):

Mohaymen
Shadwell Stable's Mohaymen stayed unbeaten and added a second straight graded stakes to his record Nov. 28 when drawing away to a clear win in the $300,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-olds at Aqueduct Racetrack. Watch Video

Settled just off the early pace set by Donegal Moon as Flexibility pressed from second, Mohaymen rated kindly along the rail in fourth for Junior Alvarado. Flexibility took a narrow advantage off the turn, but Mohaymen willingly drove between him and weakening Donegal Moon when called upon, easily shook off the leader with a furlong to run, and scooted clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/96256/unbeaten-mohaymen-easily-takes-remsen

Airoforce
John Oxley's Airoforce splashed over the sloppy, sealed track at Churchill Downs Nov. 28 with nary an issue, closing gamely to grind out 1 3/4-length victory when making his dirt debut in the $200,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II). Watch Video

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/96267/airoforce-splashes-home-in-ky-jockey-club

Tonalist
Tonalist came flying with a big late run Nov. 28 to win the $670,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Racetrack, edging out stablemate Red Vine in a photo finish after tracking far back under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/96262/tonalist-charges-to-cigar-mile-victory

Dortmund
The 3-year-old son of Big Brown pushed his record in the region to a perfect seven-for-seven Nov. 28 at Del Mar, taking the $150,000 Native Diver Stakes (gr. III) by an easy 4 1/2 lengths in his first start at the seaside racetrack. Watch Video
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/96271/dortmund-dominant-in-native-diver

Forever Unbridled
In her second start off a more than five-month layoff following a run in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), Forever Unbridled broke through Nov. 28 at Aqueduct Racetrack in the $300,000 Comely Stakes (gr. III).

After stalking the pace during the 1 1/8-mile Comely, the 3-year-old daughter of Unbridled's Song made a simultaneous move on the outside with favored Carrumba and outdueled that rival to the wire to win by a head, 7 1/2 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Wonder Gal. Watch Video

Sunday, November 29: Bombs away.

DEL MAR: Stormy Lucy wins a Grade I and paid $132.80 ridden by....Kent Desormeaux.
Pay offs:
  • $1.00 Exacta (10-3) Paid: $923.90
  • $2.00 Exacta (10-3) Paid: $1847.80 (A stunning figure especially for a Grade I)
  • $2.00 Trifecta (10-3-9) Paid: $15,143.60 (See above)
  • $1.00 Superfecta (10-3-9-12) Paid: $83,880.00
  • $1.00 Pick 3 (10-11-10) (3 Correct) Paid: $3,684.40

AQUEDUCT: Race 4 was for state breds and the win paid $111.00. A lengthy inquiry failed to make any alterations to the original finish.
Pay offs:
  • $2.00 Exacta (2-4) Paid: $801.00
  • $2.00 Trifecta (2-4-7) Paid: $23,709.00
  • $2.00 Superfecta (2-4-7-9) Paid: $229,460.00 (Incredible!)
  • $2.00 Pick 3 (1-3-2) (3 Correct) Paid: $680.00

And Junior Alvarado won the last race of the day...on turf! He finished third on turf with a higher price earlier in the day. He doesn't always get the best mounts, but he is excellent on turf.

---------------------

MOHAYMEN TO FLORIDA;

McLaughlin was understandably pleased with Mohaymen's performance, not to mention his pupil's much-improved manners since his first Grade 2 win in the Nashua under regular jockey Junior Alvarado on November 4 at the Big A.

"That was big," he said of the effort. "Junior had worked him behind horses. You never know but you need to be ready for it. I think it helped a lot, for jockey and horse, because [Junior] was confident that he'd handle it. It was great. It was a mile and an eighth and he finished strong. He's a really nice horse."

"He behaved much better," added the conditioner. "We took him to the gate a few times. He was bad the first day, which I was happy about. Like, 'OK, now we're going to school him and correct it,' and then he was really good the next two times. And then we brought the pony and that helped. He had reared up in the paddock last time. He was much better."

Mohaymen will be joined at McLaughlin's Palm Meadows winter base by fellow Derby hopeful, Grade 2 Futurity winner Annual Report, who finished fifth in a sloppy running of the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Saturday evening at Churchill Downs.

Damn. Almost went to Del Mar today but holiday traffic deterred us. 'Meaux always brings those in. :(

As a spot player, I was tempted to play a horse at Del Mar Saturday in the Grade I Hollywood Derby but was reluctant because he had never raced outside New York. Trained by Chad Brown, I thought March could win the race despite the high odds. He went off 12-1 and got caught in a photo with 14-1 Chirporactor (C. Nakatani) who, according to conventional wisdom, had no business winning that race. But especially with the thrilling finish, I am satisfied in not playing based on the outcome of a second place.

The exacta paid a handsome $172 for a single dollar.

Om (who beat American Pharoah early in their campaigns) was the overwhelming favorite and finished third.

Aqueduct's ninth race was canceled today. Due to heavy fog, the eighth race was barely visible, except for the finish, so much so that the NYRA's web site does not have a replay available as it does for all races.
