Capitalizing on what?
On supporting the team in order to raise franchise value.

Bumping franchise value raises value across the league which should obviously be the league's primary motive for most things.

If Columbus were to reach median team value rather than substantially underperforming, that would improve the overall league valuation by a significant amount. Everyone would win financially.

What do you think the NHL should do to help raise value in Columbus?

Broaden national exposure, work with the team (and players) to address player retention issues, etc. Basically, they shouldn't leave so much of the franchise valuation to chance because it doesn't always lead to an optimal outcome and maximization.

That's not unique to Columbus though. You could also argue it applies to places like Minnesota, Florida, and Arizona.

Basically, if they see that a market is underperforming relative to where they think it should be, they should look into ways to bolster that performance for the sake of overall league revenue.

Come on. You missed the obvious best move to increase the value of the franchise. Bring back Boomer.

There's so much room for growth there and the NHL is doing itself a disservice by not seeking to capitalize on it.

Why is it a NHL problem?
It's like saying burger kings value is low so the farmers/cows (whoever you want to shoot at) should work on increasing it.

Columbus's low valuation is a Columbus Blue Jacket problem. It's been said on this board several times now is the team (finally) is easier to watch because they aren't playing a Torts offensive system. If it was boring for us to watch, how do you think that plays nationally?

The Jackets lack of star power is a result of not having stars, not because the NHL is holding them down. Draft, Develop and Retain better and have the team promote them better.

I mean #1 worked for the Penguins when they were gifted Crosby, Malkin and Fleury.

They literally explained this. When each individual franchise’s value increases, the entire enterprise’s value increases. It benefits everyone to work to strengthen each individual franchise.

And your Burger King analogy doesn’t pass mustard (yes I know the word is muster). All of the teams are literally the same business.

Burger Kind, McDs, Wendy, White Castle are all selling burgers (among many others). So yes they are all in same business.

Right. Each franchise is part of the same business the same business the way each NHL franchise is part of the same business. You tried to compare different NHL teams to a farmer and a restaurant when the teams are actually franchises of the same restaurant.

If the Canadiens & Blue Jackets switched cities does anyone think the Canadiens would still be the 3rd most valuable franchise?

The past is the past, we need to learn from it, but not cry for what happened.
What should happen to improve the situation:
  1. radically improve marketing, including twitter, instagram and other social media. Taking advantage of the fact that Columbus is the only city in Ohio with an NHL club.
  2. try to popularize our players. All Patrick Laine had to do was put on his famous glasses and the internet was full of memes. Therefore, it wouldn't be out of place to talk to the players to be more active in their social networks, in the audience not afraid to say their opinions and not just the usual, boring cliché. Examples... Jakub Voracek, Patrik Laine or Nikita Kucherov after Stanely Cup winning. I'd rather pay fines for them than be a grey mouse. By the way, this is one of the reasons why I would like Laine to stay. Because Bjorky is a very good player but unimpressive. How many fans have his jersey? And we can say it about some players too.
  3. improve the overall system, from scouting, to the farm system, to the main team, so that players can grow. Because draft spots don't mean anything if a player isn't handled properly. Although I think Jarmo is trying to do that, unfortunately it's going to take some time. They didn't even build Rome in a day.
I understand there`re many things that I don`t know but I think these are one of the most important.
