@drosennhl: Lundqvist says he thinks the puck was flat when it hit Staal in the eye so he has cuts above and below his eye and is getting it checked now

flat as in parallel with the ice? cause then yes, not flat with his face though. nbc feed showed a closeup. horrible looking shot. dead center with the top of his eye

I'd do backflips if it was just cuts above and below his eye....

At that velocity, hits both above and below the eye can still cause damage to the eye - even without direct contact.

One interesting note - visors are mandatory at the 2014 Olympics. So why not get used to wearing them now?

Looked slanted.
Yep.

i'm sure they can 'strongly' suggest it... ie visor or minors... i mean they added the glove padding... not sure if that was a player decision or what

I'm not saying you're wrong about visors but they can't strongly suggest anything. That's why the league and players have a CBA. What if a player refuses?

Prayers and good thoughts going out to Staal.

Feel bad for the guy. First, a concussion and now this? No, he'll pull through.

Get well, Staalsy.

then the player doesn't play until they change their mind and decide to buy into the team's strategy, but i can guarantee you that no player on this team is going to say no to the staff and risk their spot in the lineup. idk that they'll push it, but i'm sure there are ways even if the message is sent through other guys. i'm sure it's something that will be considered though

That's an easy grievance for the NHLPA.

The sides can bargain over it and agree to grandfather it in, which I'd wager happens in the next five years. It's not going to be on a team by team basis, even as a "strong suggestion."

I'm sure they can get guys to wear visors. The Rangers mandated helmets in warmup and there are still morons on other teams skating around without them. I don't think they will though.

People bringing up Berard are doing so just because its potentially an eye injury and know it wasn't a puck in his case, right? Hossa's windup tore his cornea. I don't think that picture is a good indicator of the impact either. It looked like the puck hit square on the brow and deflected down into the eye/cheek. That shot looks like its a couple milliseconds late.

The Rangers would lose the grievance the player would file with the league. Players are notorious about being comfortable with their equipment and the coaching staff and Sather would never mess with that.

I'm not saying you're wrong. The visor rule should be mandatory but that's a CBA and league issue not a player and team issue. The NHL would NEVER allow the Rangers to force a player to wear a visor. They would never threaten to not dress a player they would get hammered from both the league and NHLPA.

It's not something a team that is trying to win a Stanley Cup would do to fracture the dressing room.

I have it freeze framed on my dvr right now. It looks like he takes it flush above the eye. I hope he is OK.
