at the end of the day, no matter how badly he just burned us, Ilya Kovalchuk will have a special place in my hockey heart. one of the most entertaining, electrifying, talented players that I have had the pleasure of watching on a regular basis. He is a ****ing horse. I will miss you to no end Ilya. Lets hope it works out for both sides.

Didn't want to read through all the posts to see if anybody already posted this, but do you think there is ANY WAY the NHL takes pity on the Devils and doesn't take the 1st rounder this year?

Absolutely not true..

NHL by-laws dictate that the Devils would retain his rights. No waivers necessary either (that's if someone wants to join the NHL season after playing abroad while the NHL season started). All 30 teams need to sign off OR he needs to wait 1 calendar year since his last game in another professional league.

Regardless, irrelevant. He will never play in the NHL again.

They chose not to toll his contract. As soon as a player officially files his retirement papers, his contract is void. He's essentially a UFA that no team is allowed to submit a contract offer to.

Either way, the Nabokov/O'Reilly rule is in play here - the second a player without an NHL contract chooses to sign in a foreign league, if they wish to return to the NHL they must pass through waivers before they join the team who signed them.

If Kovy plays this year in the KHL, and then signed a contract with New Jersey in in 2015, he would have to pass through waivers before joining the team. Radulov was different because he left the Predators with years owed. If Korolyuk wanted to return, the Devils own his rights. But Kovalchuk has no valid NHL contract and thus would be subject to waivers.

No, late February after Sochi. That's the only reason they haven't all bolted already.

Why, there's nothing at all keeping them from playing in Sochi. No one has a stick. People that think that x,y,z are going to stick around because there's something holding them back are being a bit naive.

This move is a gamechanger for SKA and some of the top teams are going to want to answer, and Ovechkin plays for one of them during his "free time."

The penalty was for the 1st Kovy contract that got rejected. So no, the two are unrelated.

I mean, Lou could ask for a favor, but there's little to no chance it's granted.

Listening to Chico talking right now makes me feel like I'm listening to 1941 German war radio.

Daly said pretty explicitly that the Devils would hold onto Kovalchuk's rights. He didn't specify how long since it's "complicated" - but TG, among others, definitely have a quote out there from Daly about it.

Daly also said the 1st round pick is unrelated to the issue. We're not getting it back.

Nabakov/RoR both wanted to join the NHL after playing in a different professional league. Once the NHL season starts, if you play a game in a different professional league.. you have to pass through waivers when signed to the NHL.

Kovalchuk's rights are retained by the Devils. Not only has Daly confirmed this, but the NHL By-laws confirm this.

You can look at the PDF yourself as its a pain in the ass to download.

Yes I sentimentally agree, but man, that burn really really ****ing hurts. Time will heal i hope.....

All the awesomeness bottled up, playoff run, timely goals/passes in the playoff run, becoming an unorthodox, but feared PK machine a sight to see... now shattered and tainted..

Can you really forget Lemaires 600th win OT goal against Toronto?

Right now, however, <ANGER MODE>!!!!!!

I'm so confused....

Plus:

I never thought I could love a hockey player so much at that moment. The guy was just so fun to watch and was exciting to watch from the get go.
