Look at the music industry, which also falls under the entertainment umbrella. A person's appearance has almost no bearing on how they sound in music / on the radio, yet 99% of singers/musicians are stupid attractive or have a unique appearance that sets them apart. Hockey is in the same ballpark. They want players they can throw on advertisements, plaster on walls, and give coherent interviews.
