- Trade Marner for Eichel and let him have his surgery. Win-win scenario. Either we get the most motivated player in the league who is dying to play in the playoffs or he's got bad luck and the surgery is career ending and we get 11M in cap space.

- Trade Rielly before the deadline, we can't afford him, not even at a discount.

- Use the cap space to get a proper 3C behind Matthews and Eichel and turn Tavares into a winger for Eichel and Nylander with Matthews.

- Acquire a 2/3D either via trade or UFA.

Pray that the competition between Matthews and Eichel results in taking this team to the next level.

You’re talking as if the Sabres would actually do that trade.

I was skeptical even before this season started when Marner was coming off a projected 94 point full season clip last year. Now, after how he’s played so far this year, If I were Kevyn Adams, I would hang up on Dubas for even thinking about that trade. Lol.

1. Fire Dubas

2. Fire Keefe

3. Trade Marner and Mrazek

4. Re-hire Babcock and kiss his feet as apology for how this city turned on him for Money Marner

Just because Marner is a greedy f*** doesn't mean Babcock is any less of a shitbag himself. That guy is so full of himself for having accomplished absolutely jack shit without stacked rosters.

I'd sell the team for $11 million a year for the next 5 years and hang out with AM, JT, MM, WN and laugh at all the suckers that think we actually care. (Yes, I know the team is worth more than $1 billion but I'm not greedy).

It’s real hard to do much with this team at this point. Pretty much ride or die with the core. Our prospect depth is thin, Dubas gave away all our draft picks and signed players to big contracts that aren’t easily moved.
To trade a Marner or a JT, the other team needs that amount of cap room, which many teams simply do not have.
Dubas created a mess the day he signed JT.

By signing Marner and Tavares, the Leafs management has cornered itself. Now it takes a few more years to recover from this.

I would sign a russian goalkeeper and a couple of scandinavian defenders over the next few years. It is necessary to start strengthening the squad with defense and goalkeeper (in russian language we say "плясать от печки" (to dance from the stove) - (you need to start from the basics)), and not sign for 10+ million forwards who are not worth 7.

Look at Edmonton. The same mistakes. McD and Drai just caught a wave of regulars and, in general, are better hockey players. But with such a defense and a goalkeeper, cups are not won.

Fire Dubas and Keefe.

Hire Rutherford and Boudreau.

Tinker with some small trades from now until January and see where the team is at the deadline. If they are securely in a playoff spot, add and if they aren’t, sell.

Basically trade anyone and everyone but Matthews unless you get a ridiculous offer. Tavares isn’t going anywhere with the contract. Marner and Nylander likely aren’t dealt now, have to wait until the offseason. Though I strongly consider Eichel for Marner.

But make it a priority to trade Rielly, Campbell, Kase, Ritchie, and Spezza by the deadline.

Get as many assets as you can and retool in the offseason.

Chicago or Calgary would be ideal for a blockbuster trade in the offseason.

So here’s the thing with marner, is that his trade value is zilch, so that sail has passed. However, a marner for eichel trade is the likely scenario and I’ll tell you why. Buffalo gets marner for 4 more seasons. Secondly and most importantly, if for some reason eichel surgery goes south and he has to go on LTIR, they free up Marners 10.9 mil caphit.

See if the Devils would still consider moving Severson and swap out Dermott/Holl to make the money work.

Rielly-Severson/Brodie
Muzzin-Liljegren
Sandin-Brodie/Severson

Up front go:

LW-Matthews-Nylander
LW-Tavares-Marner
Bunting-Kampf-Kase
Engvall-Spezza-Ho-Sang

Swap out Ritchie/Kerfoot and bring in two of Rakell/Forsberg/Hertl/Gaudreau @50%.

Swap out Mrazek for a guy like Stolarz and use the $3M elsewhere.

I think Calgary makes the most sense for a Marner blockbuster. Remember we made that huge Phaneuf trade with them on January 31st, 2010... That could be the time both teams decide to make a huge shakeup if things are not going their way.

:leafs
LW Matthew Tkachuk
LD Noah Hanifin
LD/RD Nikita Zadorov
LW Andrew Mangiapane

:flames
RW Mitchell Marner
LD Morgan Rielly
LD/RD Travis Dermott
LW Pierre Engvall

And even the value with picks. Leafs will want an extension done with Tkachuk, and Calgary one with Rielly.

For this year, Calgary is taking on 528k in cap. Next year, Calgary has 29 mill in cap space. Add in Marner/Dermott and take out Hanifin, and that goes down to 21.5 mill.

They need to sign Engvall instead of Mangiapane up front but they need to sign/replace Gaudreau and Rielly's extension will be fairly expensive as well. This will be what their lineup would look like with around 4 mill in cap space to fill the ???'s and add depth:

:flames
Coleman-Lindholm-Marner
Gaudreau (UFA)-Backlund-Dube
Pelletier-Monahan-???
Lucic-???-Engvall (RFA)

Rielly (UFA)-Andersson
Valimaki-Tanev
Kylington (RFA)-Dermott

Markstrom-Vladar

For the rest of this year, this is what the Leafs would look like:
:leafs
Tkachuk-Matthews-Mangiapane
Bunting-Tavares-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kampf-Kase (bottom 6 shutdown)
Ritchie-Kerfoot-Spezza (bottom 6 offense)
Simmonds

Hanifin-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Zadorov
Liljegren

Mrazek-Campbell

PP1
Tkachuk
Nylander-Tavares-Matthews
Hanifin

PP2
Ritchie
Mangiapane-Bunting-Spezza
Sandin

PK Forwards

Kase, Nylander, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Kampf, and maybe Mangiapane

PK Defensemen

Brodie, Hanifin, Muzzin, Holl, and Zadorov.

Now for next year, we would have Mikheyev, Zadorov, Spezza, and Campbell as our UFA's. Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Sandin, Liljegren, and Kase as our RFA's. I would estimate we would have 17.7 mill in cap space.

Let's say we give Tkachuk an 11% contract, which is right in line where he should be based on previous comparables. Since we are not accounting for cap increases here, that would mean he gets 9 mill on an 8 year deal. For guys who signed as 24/25 year old forwards after bridges, that would put him only behind Giroux, Kessel, and Voracek in terms of cap percentage, and ahead of O'Reilly, Tarasenko, Johansen, and Kuznetsov in terms of similar percentage.

For Mangipane, I think you can just use Conor Garland. Same age (although Garland signed at 25 instead of 26 like Mangipane would), Garland had 47 goals and 96 points in 164 games at the time; Mangiapane, at the same age, had 44 goals and 77 points in 178 games. Both smaller guys with somewhat similar playing styles too I would say. Garland received just north of 6% (4.95 AAV) over 5 years. Let's just say Mangiapane gets 4.9x5 (6% exactly).

Campbell likely comes in at 4 mill on the dot over 3 or 4 years. He'll be 30, and short of him being an absolute stud, guys at that age with limited starting experience don't get more than 5%.

I gave Sandin 1.5 mill x 2 and Liljegren 900k x 1. That leaves us exactly 100k mill to re-sign/replace Kase or Mikheyev, with zero depth guys... which is obviously impossible without cutting some cap. We are left some choices in that regard, but I think the simplest at this point would be to trade Ritchie and Kase.

Tkachuk - Matthews - Mangiapane
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - UFA (shutdown bottom 6)
Simmonds - Spezza - Anderson (offensive bottom 6)

Hanifin - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Sandin - Holl

Campbell - Mrazek

The Leafs would have 1.95 mill to find that UFA and perhaps add a permanent depth guy, with this being the potential Marlies roster next year:

LW Rodion Amirov – C Michael Amadio (RFA) – RW Josh Ho-Sang (AHL UFA)
LW Nick Robertson – C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev – RW Pavel Gogolev
LW Pontus Holmberg – C Mikhail Abramov – RW Alex Steeves
LW Ryan Chyzowski - C Curtis Douglas – RW ???
LW ??? – C ??? – RW ???

LD Filip Kral - RD Brennan Menell (RFA)
LD Kristians Rubins (RFA) - RD Topi Niemela (unsigned)
LD Mikko Kokkonen (unsigned) - RD Axel Rindell (unsigned)
LD ??? - RD William Villeneuve
RD Joseph Duszak (RFA)/RD Brennan Kapcheck/RD Mac Hollowell (RFA)

Kallgren - Woll (RFA)
Scott (RFA)/Petruzzelli

Conclusion
This is probably a crazy proposal with a very long shot of happening, but if we do go down the blockbuster route, I do think Calgary makes a ton of sense.

Reposting from the UFA thread, but in two months from now, if the Leafs are still in the mix but looking like they need a major shake up, this is what I would throw out there.

No changes in management or coaching, at least right now.

Ultimately, I doubt anything major happens and things will work themselves out.

If L'il Mitchie is the whiz kid playmaking dynamo that the Paul Marner Fan Club says he is, move him to centre. I keep reading about his vision and playmaking, then have him centre the second line.
I would go:
JT- 34 - Willie (Maybe catch lightning in a bottle, like the B's did with Bergeron line)
Ritchie - Mitchie - Spezza
Bunting - Kerfoot - Kase
Engvall - Kampf - Simmonds

Can't be any worse than what they are running out there now.
And really Spezza is earning top 6 minutes.

Not necessary to strip the C from JT. Nut definetely strip the A from 34 and 16 and give it to Muzzin or Spezza. 34 and 16 are not deserving of leadership roles.

Trade Marner & Reilly to Washington for Tom Wilson & Nick Jensen, plus plus plus.

The sell would be Marner's ability to help Ovechkin reach Gretzky's record by being another elite passing option to OV or covering for Backstrom if he's out with injury.

The Capitals are a tough team without Wilson and their Management has already said they will do whatever they can to help Ovechkin get the milestone, so maybe Marner helps them realize that.

I only move Rielly because he is UFA and I think he'll move on anyway. I think something stinks in the locker room and maybe he knows it.

Wilson seems like a big enough personality, well established character guy that I think he could come in and change the locker room. I don't think he would adopt a more passive game, rather the opposite. The Maple Leafs don't need to bring someone in to throw punches for the stars, they need to bring someone in that'll get the stars throwing punches.

Simmonds scrapping on the fourth line isn't going to get Matthews in any head locks. If Tom Wilson is out there with Matthews doing his thing post whistle, Matthews is going to HAVE to get involved. Probably everyone one the ice will have to at some point. That is the change they need. They don't even need to be an antagonistic, rough team, but they need to be comfortable with that style of play so that it isn't a deterent to them when they encounter it.
