This conversation is going on in at least a half-dozen threads right now, so if you could control the leafs, what would you do? This means you can be Keefe, Shanahan, Dubas, Tanenbaum, or even just Auston Matthews or Jason Spezza, what would you do?

Personally, I'd be Shanahan and take control at this point. Try and right this ship, show I'm pissed off, give it to the end of the week and if they don't look drastically better:
- JT loses his C
- I make it known I'm making changes to the core
- Keefe and Dubas follow my plan to a tee, or they're out

And I'll add to this, I love Keefe and Dubas but Shanahan needs to do something here

I hope something happens as I’m losing interest in the team.

Realistically you move Marner first and try to retool.

If you really want to blow it up and start from scratch you trade Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

Tavares is sticking here till the last year of his contract.

If Willy goes that might send me into a hiatus for a while. I would love to see him go somewhere else and tear up though. Imagine him playing on the Avs or something.

Strip the C from JT and give it to Spezza.
Split the big four into 4 lines and tell
them W over personal stats. If they don’t like it, option is to sit at press box or sit at home.
The lines are as follows:
Spezza-AM-Kase
Bunting-Kerfoot-Willie
Ritchie-JT-Simmonds
Engvall-Kampf-Marner
Which ever line seems to be working that night will get more mins.
Holl will be 3rd pairing with Dermott, Lil plays with Muzzin.
The team needs to play a structured defensive simple game, if any players can’t do that, sit in the press box.
In terms of drafting, the picks need to be able to skate, play physical, hard to play against and can shoot.

Of the big four, if all are traded, Willie will be the most likely be the one who win the Cup first. Not bc he is the most talented one but bc of his cap hit.

Whichever team trading for him will most likely be needing a second or third option in offence and that’s why they trade for Willie, while teams trading for AM, MM and JT, those guys will most likely be the top player of the team and expect to be leaders.

- Trade Marner for Eichel and let him have his surgery. Win-win scenario. Either we get the most motivated player in the league who is dying to play in the playoffs or he's got bad luck and the surgery is career ending and we get 11M in cap space.

- Trade Rielly before the deadline, we can't afford him, not even at a discount.

- Use the cap space to get a proper 3C behind Matthews and Eichel and turn Tavares into a winger for Eichel and Nylander with Matthews.

- Acquire a 2/3D either via trade or UFA.

Pray that the competition between Matthews and Eichel results in taking this team to the next level.

I would be Shanahan. I would start by having a serious talk with Dubas and get him to lay out the plan. If the plan does not include a big trade (Think Kahwi trade), then he is fired, and I am bringing in someone else to take the job. I would fire him and run the ship myself until someone interviews and gets the job. I would then trade 2 of Marner, Tavares or Rielly. I keep Matthews, though, because I do believe he is the true leader of this team. I sit with Matthews and tell him... We are making changes significant changes. I am giving you a chance to be the leader of this team, but we are doing this together. 2 of those guys are gone. We talk it out until we decide who will be leaving. Once we make the decision, we then work together AS A TEAM to find the right fit and right package back. Once we feel comfortable with who is coming back, we execute. BUT this needs to be a package, not a hockey trade. I want players who can play and have hearts. I am looking at guys I know who will come in and put their entire hearts out and begin to rebuild a core that plays tough and protects our stars. 1 11 million dollar player and a few 5-7.5 mil players to surround Mathews with.

I know you are all going to say... you're letting a player run the ship. No, I am working with the leader of this team to build around him. I want him to feel like a leader. I will empower him to lead and speak his mind. At the end of the day, I make the final decision, but we talk about everything and build this team together for the better. You always build and work with your leaders so they feel like they can indeed lead and have a voice. The issue is Dubas got played by these guys, and he lets them do as they please. We wouldn't be doing that. We would be collaborating and teaching them to be leaders. Right now, we have no leader. JT is unfortunately not the leader we need for this team, and whether he stays or is traded... Matthews will take the C, and we build him up to be the voice of the room.

I'd rather see Marner for Doughty with LA retaining a few mil for age tax. Throw in Engval for all I care.

I think Willy is the 2nd best player of those 4. It wouldn't just be due to cap hit, but yeah it no doubt makes it better. It's why there's no reason to trade him imo. He's 25 and a lot of his bad habits have been cleaned up a lot. I'd trade marner and tavares for nothing so we can use the cap space on something else.

Trade Marner for Eichel

Strip Tavares of the C

Nick Richie bought out

Would not trade them for nothing. Secretly hoping Hawks to struggle like us and both teams end up doing a mega trade, like Debrinct and Jones for Reilly and Marner.

If I could control the Leafs I would put all the players into a Squid Game environment in off-season, where they compete to win all their money back. It would be a secret facility built by MLSE, and only HFLeafs members would be allowed to run the games in a masked costume (mask has Leaf logo) armed with aluminum Easton hockey sticks.

Whoever survives makes the team and gets a percentage of the pot, whoever doesn't is 'eliminated'. The games will test their perseverance, ability to handle high pressure environment, their thirst to win money back and most importantly how to play as a team.

You are working around someone who hasn't earned that right. If he is the leader, then he is one of the main problems.

And yes, you are letting the player run the ship.

As Shanny:

Fire Spreadsheet Dubious
Fire Keefe
Bring in a proven winner as GM and let him choose his own coaching staff
Trade Marner and Reilly
At some point in next two years trade Matthews (he is as bad as Marner and I am not convinced he will stay once he has the chance to leave so might as well get a King's ransom for him now)
Use the cap savings from those three to sign other players, including a starting goalie

I like speed, aggressive forecheck and work horse type players(pretty much everything you see in good teams) so i would have kept the line up similar to several years back and added certain elements to it...And yes i know some of our top players aren't working hard enough but i think the lines are weak and so chemistry is ruined....this makes other players(that are good at keeping the puck) waste energy chasing the puck all the time(for example.. Ritchie, Simmonds, etc, have no chemistry with anyone because one is past his prime and the other is just overrated).

Marner...Matthews....Hyman
Nylander...Hall....Brown(Connor)
Moore(Trevor)...Kerfoot....Kapanen
Engvall.....Spezza.....Gauthier

I know many didn't like Goat but i thought for a big guy he skated fairly well and did a decent job on the defensive side. Now of course some will say we can't afford all those but i think you'd come pretty darn close(getting rid of JT's contract would make a lot of room) and it's a way better lineup then the shit we have now.

Player coach.

The players tune out the coach(es).

Maybe Marner can play coach.

Can't be any worse.
The big elephant in the room is John Tavares’s supposedly unmovable $11 M behemoth contract.

Maybe try to convince him that the Islanders’s spanking new arena could be the place to retire as an Islander.

Ever work for a boss who's extremely incompetent and gets you to do all of his work for him?
Let the players play, let your coachs coach
You also don't build someone up to be the voice of the room, it's something you either have or not, and there's nothing wrong with that
