If there was one movie you think everyone should see what would it be?

Great selection. It wrecks me for some reason, the universality I suppose.

It hasn’t been mentioned yet so I’n happy to be the Network (1976) guy
Network, from what I recall probably 20 years ago, is that it is thought-provoking concerning how narratives and truth are filtered in the era of mass-communication. There were some good monologues in there.

I'm thinking Tree of Life (director, Terrence Malik). It's a very visual and emotional picture. Quite beautiful images. Also, rather expansive in its narrative. The sort of film that makes one appreciate not only life, but also existence, big and small, perhaps a bit more.
And if I can use my vote to delete another suggestion, it would be this one. This movie was very up its own ass. One of the few I've ever walked out on. I found it unintentionally hilarious.

Surprised you had such a strong reaction against it. Too literal? Contrived?

Since you said that you'll watch anything that we suggest, regardless of runtime, I choose Logistics. It's a 2012 Swedish film that's credited as the longest movie ever made. It's 857 hours long, so it'll take 35 days to finish... if you don't sleep or go to the bathroom. Have fun!
What did he do to you to deserve this?
I looked at part one on youtube and... seriously, I don't see the point. It's like if the christmas fire app was a movie. lol

2001. It is amazing how much of the future this became a template for (AI, technology, etc.,).

And obviously an achievement in filmmaking that possibly hasn't been matched since, also.

Others: Apocalypse Now, Mulholland Drive, The Great Escape, Moneyball.

Straightforward title. If there was one single film you think everyone should watch what would it be?

There are plenty more dedicated film aficionados in here than myself, of course, and I’m interested to see the replies and branch out myself. I will watch every single film that’s suggested regardless of genre, quality, runtime, or time period. One suggestion per user, please.

Thank you. :)

Have you seen Youngblood yet?

None of these were my guess for you! I thought for sure you'd say Children of Paradise.
It was a genuine struggle, for sure. But I wasn't sure that the best movie that I have ever seen was the movie that I want everybody to see. It seemed to me that Pather Panchali was more universal and more powerful, not to mention, the best example in cinema of a humanist work of art. Casablanca I considered just because, for many, movies mean Hollywood and Casablanca is a hallmark of that kind of artistry. And The Double LIfe of Veronique, I considered just because how magically a great director can weave atmosphere into an experience all in itself, how he can create a work of art that words alone can't fully describe. The only other movie that I considered was 8 1/2 but I eventually thought that might be less of a primary choice and more of a later treat.

Requiem for a dream - dont do drugs kids.
Whiplash
Moneyball
The Big Short

Not a big film guy personally.

Cant go wrong with a lot of the classics: The Prestige, Memento, Shawshank redemption, schindler's list, Silence of the Lambs, Se7en etc
Watched Requiem for a Dream. Really loved it. Was the only film I hadn't seen on this list.

IDK... I don't really think of any particular film as "required" viewing. It might be some social message film like Do the Right Thing, or just one of the pinnacles of the craft like 2001 or Ran, or just super enjoyable blockbusters like Jurassic Park, or a foundational film like Citizen Kane. There are probably some films you *should* see if you want to be a "cinephile" or whatever, but honestly that's all hooey anyway. Watch what you like.

Edit: That being said, if you want a recommendation? I'm just going to recommend a fun film I love. It's great, it has a ton of heart, it is extremely well shot. Just watch Chungking Express.
Thank you so much for the recommendation.... I've seen 2001, Jurassic Park, and Citizen Kane, so I went for your final recommendation.....

Really enjoyed Chungking Express. As you said, very well shot, and a ton of heart. Really loved the energy the overall film gave off and ever part of it felt special. Each actor really seemed like they were pouring a lot into the film.
Probably Jaws or Gladiator. Jaws is essentially a perfect movie. Gladiator with it's story, acting, and set pieces makes it an awesome experience from start to finish and it never gets old.

Both the quintessential "movie experience" to me.
Have seen these both before, but I rewatched Gladiator off of your recommendation. It had been quite a while since I've seen Gladiator, but I recently watched 300, so I was sort of in that same mind-set.

Absolutely excellent film. One of the very top tier movies in my opinion. Specifically the point you mentioned about the "set pieces". Such a great film. Thanks for recommending.

Freddy Got Fingered.
Love this movie. Absolutely hilarious. Watched it again after this post and it was still as funny as the first time I saw it. I frequently quote "Daddy would you like some sausage? to my wife, and she never gets it because she won't watch the film. Thanks bud.
Tokyo Story. It's slow and meditative and not a lot happens, but potentially makes you feel whole and can sort of center you as a person, I find, if that makes sense.

And since somebody used their pick on it, it shouldn't be cheating to just second Chungking Express.
I very much value your recommendations. Shareef and will get to this one when I have time. Hopefully this weekend.

Just one movie? That's tough. I could maybe do 1 per genre but 1 movie only...

Can't be some overrated garbage like Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind or Casablanca.

I'm having a hard time choosing between Shawshank, Clockwork Orange, 2001, American History X and Saving Private Ryan. Part of me wants to say a guilty pleasure film like Hostel, or Friday the 13th (original) or a troll answer film like Salo or a Serbian Film or Antichrist.

We'll go with Saving Private Ryan.

Random fun fact that you might be interested in: the quirky female lead is also the vocalist for Eyes on Me from Final Fantasy VIII. She's great, in my opinion (both acting-presence-wise in the few films she's appeared and musically-- has a solid self-written Cocteau-Twins-inspired album (Fuzao/Restless/Anxiety) that shows up on a lot of Dream-Pop top lists, too).
