Ouch

We wouldn't have Tavares or Willy or Muzzin or Brodie or Campbell.

We'd still have Fred and Kadri and Zaitsev and Martin and Komarov and maybe the likes of Pageau and Palmieri.

And we'd have no prospects.

Maybe we could get a show of hands. Who here wishes Lou Lam was still the GM?
You likely wont get a lot of responses but there are a lot of people here that echo some of his tendencies. Penny smart and dollar stupid decisions, overpaying for depth, coveting low skilled "character" players etc.

This has been bugging me for a bit now.
If Lou was still a Leaf would it have bettered our chances at signing JT?
I believe it was Lou who didn't want to move Bosak, JVR and Komorov (for picks / prospects we could have moved to improve our D)
Then he leaves, goes to the island and in all likely hood signs JT
Would it have made more sense to let Lou go at the deadline and let Dubas take over or keep Lou for another year and have a better shot at signing JT
The way I see it we lost 3 players, a GM, a scout and potentially the best free agent to ever hit the market and got nothing in return but an unproven GM( I know the marlies won and SSM won but zip at the NHL level)

Lou wouldn't have signed JT.

Lets be honest here, Tavares was coming home no matter who was GM . It just lined up perfectly.

I've constantly criticized Dubas, however, I'm pretty happy with this team, I feel like if we still had Hyman, or at least Mccann and traded for Josh Manson to replace Holl, the team would be as almost as complete as we could have.

No offense to posters, but this Lou vs Dubas debate has to be the most tired debate on this forum. And I know people will say "don't click this thread then", but the problem is that this topic permeates a million freaking threads. Daily. I suggest keeping all Lou vs Dubas debates on this thread so people can happily argue all they want and those of us who don't give a shit don't have to read about it a million times a week.

It's worth remembering that Lou's job on Long Island would have been very different than if he had stayed on in Toronto, or what Dubas is tasked with currently.

Lou went to the Island and lost his franchise center Tavares the first month on the job and was tasked with guiding the team through uncertain times under new ownership. He did really well, putting a structure to the Islanders with Barry Trotz and having a ton of success with them. I always liken what he did to what Fletcher and Burns did for Toronto in the 90s. Build a ton of chemistry and team structure, get the most juice out of a veteran team, but without the underlying talent, it's not championship material. I'd liken his work in New York to his 2011 run with the Devils in that respect.

Lou's job in Toronto would have been very different than what he has done on Long Island. It would have been in the Ross Atkins/Mark Shapiro/Kyle Dubas realm of guiding along an "innocent climb" with big ticket free agents and slowly weening off of high draft selections, sort of continuation of the Patrick Marleau signing, who knows what negotiations with the Big 3 would have been like, who knows if he himself would have brought Tavares here or someone else. Who knows what his cap allocation would have looked like.

Interesting how the debate gets "tired" as soon as Lou's team starts sucking and looks locked into longterm caphell with a super old roster.
