This has been bugging me for a bit now.
If Lou was still a Leaf would it have bettered our chances at signing JT?
I believe it was Lou who didn't want to move Bosak, JVR and Komorov (for picks / prospects we could have moved to improve our D)
Then he leaves, goes to the island and in all likely hood signs JT
Would it have made more sense to let Lou go at the deadline and let Dubas take over or keep Lou for another year and have a better shot at signing JT
The way I see it we lost 3 players, a GM, a scout and potentially the best free agent to ever hit the market and got nothing in return but an unproven GM( I know the marlies won and SSM won but zip at the NHL level)

I would think the decision to not trade our UFAs was not Lou's alone, and I don't think where he is has any bearing on where Tavares is going to sign, in all likelihood he's re-signing with the Isles, Lou or no Lou.

Lou helped Islanders chances because his acquisition gave Tavares some hope for the future. If we had kept him, Islanders might still have done the same kind of move to the same kind of effect, and our chances would be unaffected.

Would Lou have done better as a pitchman to Tavares than Dubas thoug? I am not so sure. Lou has not been able to sign Tavares thus far.

For a dysfunctional organization like the Islanders he can be a positive one, but I doubt he’d make much of a difference with the Leafs.

As noted, he was unable to stop Parise leaving the Devils, so it’s not as if he’s some sort of negotiation wizard.

It doesn't change anything, but there is no question in my mind Lou has helped their chances. With Snow still there I think he was less likely to stay, Lou offers a new hope which wasn't there prior. It's okay to admit that, really has no bearing on the decision to let Lou go, it just so happened.

I'm not really sure Lou's brand of selling a program is particularly appealing for a star athlete to listen to. Case in point, Parise, Gomez, Niedermayer, Holik and many a New Jersey Devil getting the heck out over the years.

I think the plan all along from the day Lou came on board was that he would not be Leafs GM after this past season and the Leafs new JT would possibly be a UFA at the same time, so I do not think it was a factor the Leaf's considered to be an advantage in signing JT. Can't speak for the Islanders, I speculate they signed Lou to help entice JT to stay.

It certainly would have taken away from the Islanders arensal, but if Tavares stays in New York because of Lou, maybe he's not the would be Leaf star we are looking for.

A GM might play somewhat of a role in a player re-signing, but probably not to the extent that all else is equal and that's the deciding factor, particularly when it comes to a significant name with options.

JVR and Bozak were each in a trade proposal, but there's differing reasons for why the deals didn't materialize.

Lou has a bigger job title with NYI than he would've had if remaining here, and Shanahan might've wanted to promote Dubas anyway.

Lou is not a motivational speaker or a good guy to have as your presenter. Apparently Dubas is taking from Theo Epstein's aproach.

No lou would have f***ed us. He can't have a beard, can't be himself, can't wear 91. Thank God lou is gone, so now if JT wants to come here, he can be who he wants and embrace playing for his child hood team

why would you think he can't wear 91?
lou allows established players to wear their numbers.

I think Kyle Dubas is the perfect guy to Market this young, upcoming team to John Tavares. I think his new way of thinking and ability to relate to people around his age group (JT included) would definitely have a wow factor when compared to the other cookie cutter general managers. The league is an old mans club and Dubas brings a breath of fresh air which would make the leafs stand out compared to the rest (for better or worse).

That being said Kyle has yet to achieve anything in this league, but Tavares being from Toronto helps, as does having a world class coach and players

What if we had kept Lou and the Islanders hired Dubas? Then he gave an awesome presentation and Tavares signed with the Isles? Then people would freak why’d you keep Lou. You can’t win. What if’s keep you stuck in the past.

I think Lou going to the Islanders helped both their chances and ours at the same time, if that's even possible - Garth Snow and their current course probably weren't all that attractive as far as winning went, so at least they have a brighter future today than they had a couple months ago in that regard; But Dubas, as the GM of the future for the Leafs, is likely a better person to make the pitch to JT on our behalf than a short-term Lamoriello. Both teams' futures are better off with Lou in New York, I believe, regardless of Tavares' decision.

I agree, but it's pretty clear doughty isn't coming here. We will have to draft our stud D
We already have.
