Not sure if this is worth a thread but if Canada had NOT won in regulation, and it was CLOSE, everyone would be saying the U.S. threw the game to eliminate Canada.

You never know in hockey. I did NOT see Sweden coming close to the U.S., especially after the U.S. score 20 seconds in, but...

The Americans were always going to have trouble without Matthews and his generational compete level available to lead the way.
I am not criticizing the U.S. for losing to Sweden. It is what it is.

But if Canada needed this game because we had NOT won in regulation, the conspiracy theories would be everywhere.

Everyone would be saying the U.S. threw the game to avoid Canada like Sweden did in 2006.

It is just hard to comment the result of irrelevant game....

USA did not had to win against Swede for the chance to win it all against Canada (something they could have wanted to do...)

Maybe... but one is a gold medal versus this... and in soccer it is judged as normal something you gained the right to do by winning the previous game and a sensible strategy I think, which make sense. It is something the coach was reported thinking about doing

That's true and, like I said, I'm not sure there much of a discussion to be had.

If Hedman had done anything with the ridiculous percentage of PP and OT time given to him…Sweden would be playing for the title

And people would be saying this because...? That US is scared of a rematch or something?

Biiiiiiiiiiig stretch IMO. Especially since US got f***ed by injuries in this game.

Not a stretch. They said the same thing about Sweden in 2006 when they won the Gold Medal. Plus, people LOVE a conspiracy theory.

The Swedish coach in 2006 openly contemplated tanking against Slovakia in the final round-robin game of the tournament to avoid playing Canada in the quarterfinals. Sweden lost to Slovakia 3-0, and drew Switzerland in the quarterfinal as a result. Canada lost to Russia in the opposite bracket, and Sweden ended up taking the gold medal.

I think that's exactly what you were referring to, no?
