If Boston Wins the Presidents Trophy is the Point System Flawed

Stop treating regulation wins/losses and skill competition wins/losses the same. After 60 minutes, during the regular season, it's no longer hockey game, it's purely a skills competition.

All teams play under the same rules. If you want more OT points, get better at hockey, simple as that.

The only (reasonably fixable) thing flawed about the point system is the loser point

just go to wins and losses like every other sports league in the world
Most other sports don't have as many draws at the end of regulation as hockey does. Except for soccer, but they moved to a three point system in the early 90s to encourage more offensive play. Which has worked, as far as I know. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but why not move to a three point system? Three points for a regulation win, two for an OT win, one for reaching OT. What would be the downside of this? Just out of curiosity I punched in the numbers for the current standings. It wouldn't change a whole lot except rewarding teams with more regulation wins.

Three point system just makes so much more sense but Americans just have to refuse every good idea what isn't theirs. 3 point system actually makes teams to try to win on 3rd period instead of just trying to avoid mistakes and waiting for OT

Yes Toronto should win it every year, Bettman keeps talking this parody crap when 99% of us Hockey fans just want to see #CanadasTeam win every year

Do I think they're as good as their points in the standings? No. But that's not the standings' job. It's to determine who makes the playoffs and the rules are the same for everyone.

They have the least amount of regulation losses. Teams haven't been able to beat them a lot in a 60 minute hockey game. It's not like that's a bad thing. Takes a lot of effort and a good team game to do that.
Top team in the league after 60 minutes. Drop OT all together and Bruins are best team in the league.

If Boston wins the PT again then every so called contender should hang their head in a deep profound shame.
Oh the drama.

Boston sits #1 in the league right now with 97 pts, but
-They have 30 losses (15 in overtime). No other team in the top 11 has more than 29 losses
-They're 9th in wins at 41
-They're 9th in goal differential
-9th in regulation wins
-They have one player in the top 44 via individual pts
-9th in goals for, 8th in goals against
-8th ranked PP, 6th ranked PK

Los Angeles as well, 36 wins, 33 losses, but 11 in OT, whilst sitting 3rd in the pacific division
What the f*** does that have to do with anything tho?????

Most points = President's Trophy.

Are you mad because they don't have the most wins?

And so what ?

That's the point system used by every team, right ?

I’m personally a fan of 3 pts for a RW 2 pts form OT/SOW and 1 pt for an OT/SOL system. I don’t like creating 3 pt games just because it goes to OT

They are 6 and 12 in the 3 on 3. If OT was played by playoff rules, I would wager they would be far and ahead with the best record in the league.

The point system is flawed regardless of whether or not Boston wins the President's Trophy.

Exactly this.

It's ridiculous for a pro sports league to have a system where there's a different number of points available from game to game and also where points are awarded before the game is over.

It has nothing to do with Boston

When it doubt, blame Americans 🙄

You know what else also made teams want to win? 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for any loss. There was nothing wrong with that system. It's a team sport, it should be played as such. Get rid of shootouts and play longer 3 on 3 OT. If the two teams can't score a 3 on 3 goal then that's too bad you each get a point.

Could just award the Trophy to the team with the most wins. Tiebreak is regulation wins, second tiebreak points

Easy.
Or just get rid of it. It's a stupid award anyways. Why doesn't the team that scores the most goals get an award and a banner in their rafters?

Because wins are more valuable?

That means they have 15 ties (if games end in regulation). I think that do away with OT and just end the game with 1 point and give 3 points for regulation wins. I think that it will save players from wear and tear with extra minutes in OT. No shootouts, I think it add no value to the true gauge of team building in the standing other than the entertainment and some luck.

Or just get rid of it. It's a stupid award anyways. Why doesn't the team that scores the most goals get an award and a banner in their rafters?

They got rid of that system because coaches just played for the tie in 5 on 5 OT and people didn't like ties. If you don't want ties, and you don't want forever sudden death OT in the regular season, all the answers are flawed. 3 on 3 and shootouts have as much to do with real hockey as a donut eating contest.

It's a dumb OT and pts system. What other league reduces it's players by 40% in OT? Just play 10 mins 5 on 5 and call it a day. Surely North American heads won't explode too bad over ties.

As for Boston, who cares. Same rules for everybody. They are regular season masters before the usual flaming out short of a cup.
