Then, if it doesn't happen: "look, all I said was that I wouldn't be shocked; I didn't say that it would happen".
Do you only want the insiders to post when it is 100% going to happen? Because then we have no insider comments. It may not happen, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Honestly, if you don't believe anything, then why come in the thread? You can save yourself the time by looking for the CONFIRMED threads. Much easier.

I doubt Canucks are serious about Necas especially with the news that Guentzel is hitting Free Agency.

I think Canucks number 1 target is JG and they wont be doing anything until the free agency window opens. I think if JG lets them know he isnt interexted in Van then Van will circle back to Necas.

thats what they get for scheduling the playoffs to potentially end late June. Teams can't wait that long
If you start the season earlier it conflicts even more with football and the baseball playoffs, which are higher priority for US TV networks.

I'm just amused when these guys use the language that doesn't hold them in any way accountable for their now public thoughts/opinions.

And honestly, it doesn't say much about being an "insider" if you have to do this all of the time. Any yahoo can say what was said the way it was said.

But maybe he'll show me something and it'll happen.

This. It’s a big reason why it grinds my gears when people bitch about Friedman. Elliotte is without a doubt the top dog in the business, and he openly speculates and reports things he hears. Everyone would’ve loved if Bob Mackenzie mentioned things he’s hearing around the league that are just discussions.

I’m sure the Canucks would love Jake Guentzel… but I have a hard time believing a US-born player who has only played in the east would pack up his family and move to the west coast to a more expensive city, with the most extreme travel in the league, amongst the highest taxes, to play in more notoriety, and amidst a more intense media market.

Canadian teams need to target players like Necas because they need that exclusive negotiating window to lock them down long-term before they reach their apex. It’s what Vancouver did with JT Miller originally. It’s why they had to go that route rather than sign Artemi Panarin.

On the other side, I question whether Carolina is dealing Necas this week if they don't think they can sign Guentzel.

Unless it's a major forward coming back. Then instead of Necas/Guentzel + Jarvis staying, it becomes "Acquired forward" + Jarvis.

I don't have an issue with it. In fact it would be great if out of playoff teams would stop being so adverse to making the news during the playoffs.

Wasn't Ziggy Palffy traded during the Stars/Sabres Cup Final in 1999?

Good memory!

Also, that’s a weird day for that lol.

Edit: or not, I guess. (Re: the timing, not your memory.)

The Blue Jackets were pretty busy here in 2023, I forgot when that happened already:

IMG_7662.jpeg

These CBJ trades involved the signing rights of a UFA and pretty significant cap dump so it makes sense that they got to them this fast.

In 2022, there were some cap dumps before and after Game 1 of the SCF on June 15:

2019: (signing rights) Day of Game 4 (BOS vs STL)
Signing Rights: Hayes was a UFA.

2016:
Couple trades before the SCF started on May 30 and a cap dump after Game 5 (PIT vs SJS).
Signing Rights: Gudbranson was unsigned RFA, Sadowy was an unsigned prospect
Cap Dump: Savard

2014 Betwern Game 1 and 2 (NYR vs LAK).
Signing Rights: Boyle was a UFA

2013: Before the SCF started.
Signing Rights: Gonchar was a UFA

And then on the day of Game 1 & day before Game 6 (BOS vs CHI)
Signing Rights: Bernier was an unsigned RFA & Steit was a UFA

I would be shocked if it's anywhere but to Columbus. What are you doing in that case, just make Tulsky full gm

Doesn’t make sense to do it too early unless someone is overpaying to get it done now. That would be Jim Rutherfords music so Vancouver could actually happen.

The Canes have a lot of business to get to but it’s not like that don’t have any time before free agency. Jake isn’t coming back so no reason to plan around him. We’re going to have to replace at least two top six forwards when we don’t like to overpay free agents and don’t like to overpay in trades. Makes it tough, we’ll see if someone is in a cap squeeze and gives up a guy.

I could see if Necas gets traded that it precedes much of the frenzy, but in the next couple of days seems a bit rushed.

Frees up a lot of cap/term and gets younger with Hoglander. Let’s not be so hyperbolic. My proposal was just a base, not the exact deal that would get done.
Doesn’t make sense. Hoglander isn’t a replacement. Canes aren’t swapping kk for mikheyev. Makes 0 sense all around

I would normally agree with your take here but Canucks are a team with a lot of Americans and there is history with our front office and JG. Vancouver taxes aside is a pretty nice city year round with everything close except the road teams. Could be Jake has spoken to someone and let it be known he wants to come here never know.

Wouldn't making impactful player transactions before hiring a GM have negative consequences on that GM search?

For the upteenth time, taking on a bad contract (Mikheyev) for Kotkaniemi makes no sense, when his buyout is so cheap and the point of dealing him would be to clear cap, not take it on.

Kotkaniemi is on a bad deal too, yes, but the point of trading him would be for a late round pick or future considerations.

Necas is worth more than Hoglander, don’t think that needs any explanation.

Need anything else explained to you?

Not if Tulsky is the permanent gm, which many of us kind of assume. I think the search is more likely to get us a president than a GM. Waddell was viewed as more of a figurehead gm, more of a shmoozing president.

So Carolina acts as a Farm Team for their old GM in Columbus.

It is more likely that they never trade with one another until Waddell waddles into retirement.
