I wonder if the Bruins will follow suit to repay fans?

Honest question...what's the purpose of these initiatives? To draw fans in? To make fans feel good?

Nothing ever changes.

Here we are asking for free stuff and readily we admit it's a business, lock-out or not.

I want something that I won't pay if I want more of it.

Pretty much, and this is why I asked what I did.

Which is why I replied with what I did.

What was the title of the thread? "I wonder if the Bruins will follow suit to repay fans?"

One would assume coming off the 3rd lockout in the last 20 years people would expect a pretty mixed bag of replies to a thread like this. You and Wally are acting like JJ pessimists are being asinine.

Fact is, JJ has earned his reputation. He didn't come into ownership a few years ago. As a long time fan of the team under his ownership I absolutely feel entitled to air my grievances. And as a JJ optimist, you and Wally are entitled to voice you praises. But I think it's a bit laughable that the two of you are surprised there are so many who want to air their displeasure with the guy who's arguably the figure head of the lockout.

I get that you and Wally feel that we should be happy with getting hockey back and nothing more... That we don't have any right to ***** about something we have every right to decide whether or not to buy. Fact is, this is Boston...not Tampa Bay or Pittsburgh. New Englanders are known for their *****ing...or so I've ben told. When we feel like we've been **** on and taken advantage of, we say it how it is. We don't generally say "thank you for Fing us, we're just grateful you're taking us back!"

I'm sure you won't like the analogy, but I'm gonna make it anyways.

If I'm sitting at a restaurant and I bite into a fried chicken sandwich and it is raw in the middle, I'm the type of person who is going to say something to my server. At the very least I expect them to make me a new sandwich. At the very most, I expect them to apologize whole heartedly, make me a new sandwich and comp the entire check. Maybe even offer a discount for a return visit possibly.

The normal thing to do is to apologize whole heartedly and at least comp the sandwich. Anything over that is extra imo.

Imo what Pittsburgh and Phoenix are doing is apologizing whole heartedly, comping the entire check, and offering the next visit on them...or a 50% discount on the next visit. What JJ pessimist are saying is- we expect JJ to say "sorry about the sandwich...I'll make you another one". Then he gives us our regular check at the end of out meal and expects us to pay for it in full. He does't feel like he has to comp anything. He doesn't feel like he needs to discount anything. He may have wronged you to a degree. But he knows he has the best food in town. If you don't want to come back, F u. There's a line waiting at the door to sit at your table.

Pittsburgh has a line waiting at the door for a table just like JJ does in Boston. But the ownership is doing what they can to make it right. They aren't pompous. They know they could make more money by not going above and beyond. It's about putting your best foot forward to show the fans you appreciate their support.

You don't have to agree with what they are doing in Pittsburgh and Phoenix. But I certainly don't feel bad about comparing how JJ handle his team post lockout to how other teams handle theirs. They are both going to earn their reputations...

shop nhl should do something significant IMO. Let us grab some garb cheap.

Should. Probably 20-25% off for the first week of the season.

Good on Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

Agreed. many will say it's too little too late. I say, at least they are attempting to go above and beyond.

I think JJ is going to raise prices once he's done berating Jeff Vinik and Mario.

No one will be shocked.

Didn't realize JJ had so many long lost relatives on this board.

"We should be thankful that hockey is back so just grab your ankles and be happy".

THEY SHOULD BE THANKFUL THAT WE ARE BACK!

When is the last time you heard of a sheperd thanking this sheep?

Jacobs will offer free ketchup and mustard when you spend $8 on a hot dog.

Not likely. Rumor has it they are suppose to be charging for condiments this season.

Goodwill gesture. Businesses do it all the time for all sorts of reasons. Honest question.... did you really not know that?

They should be happy we are back. But as a STH I knew last Spring when I signed up to pay for this season that a lockout was a possibility. I have to assume anyone else that decided to purchase ST knew also.

I wasn't surprised about the lockout...dissapointed though.

Hopefully we won't have to worry about this again for 8-10 years.

I am happy hockey is back and don't expect to get rewarded for being loyal. ..I think winning the cup again would make it all right for most of us.;)

JJ is the same as most business owners. I don't love the guy but think the B's management has been better the last few years. It seems like JJ's son Charlie is interested in hockey. Maybe he will take over soon.

We need to get the season started.

Guys, at the end of the day, there is nothing that Jacobs could do that would put him in a positive light with some people, and that's ok. If he was to roll out the same perks that other teams did, there would still be complaints about it. No one is forcing you to come back. If you're that offended by the lockout and the way you feel you're being treated, then find something else to do with your time and money.

It's just a sense of entitlement that I don't understand. If there are perks, I'll gladly take them. But I don't feel I deserve anything in exchange for my ticket money other than entrance to the game...especially in a market like this.

I was curious because as I thought about it, if the intent is to "win fans back", if a free hot dog is enough to lure a fan back that otherwise would have stayed away because they were angry about the lockout, then I would argue that they really weren't that mad to begin with. I was trying to figure out if there was more to it than just a goodwill gesture.

Thanks for the snark, though! Much appreciated.

She's not a fan of goodwill apparently.

No worries, Kate. I'm more of a St vincent de paul guy myself ;)

The novelty/appreciation factor associated with goodwill goes out the window a bit when it's expected, doesn't it?

No problem, but to be honest, your question seemed a little snarky in itself, like it was rhetorical because you already had decided any kind of discount, giveaway etc was meaningless so there was really no answer to your question that would have satisfied you, thus the question really wasn't being asked out of genuine curiosity.

But perhaps I was wrong.

And of course no free hot dog is going to smooth over fans. But sending some a card after a loved one dies doesn't really make the pain go away either. You do it because it's the right thing to do. Same here (though of course we are talking about something far more frivolous than death). You screw over your customers, you make a gesture of goodwill.

It's not only the right thing to do, it's good business.

Meh, just play the games. Let the market drive food prices. If people are willing to spend $8 on a beer then that justifies charging $8. If they raise the price to $10 and people still buy, then charge $10. I don't feel like the league "owes me" anything. I've spent money on tickets, jerseys and video games and I've gotten enjoyment out of those things. Nobody forces me to buy the products. If teams want to make a gesture and offer discounts on food/parking or whatever then good for them, but I don't feel entitled to it. It was a big deal to me as a broke student working at a pizza place that they had $10 tickets after the last lockout. It meant a lot to me that I could afford to go to games. In many ways, I loved watching those crappy teams in 05-07 more than I enjoy watching now.

My point is that there are those who will come back to the game and are truly happy to have hockey, and there are those who feel slighted and will boycott and claim that they are hurt. Work stoppages are a part of sports. The world series of baseball (lol) was canceled in 94, and basketball played a shortened season last year. **** happens. If you want to bail on the B's because JJ won't kiss your ass, then see ya. Cheaper tickets for the rest of us when the supply goes down.

Ah I see. I step on your foot by accident. I could say "Excuse me," to let you know I'm sorry, but since you expect me to do it, since it's almost mandatory, my apology is hollow. Therefor I'll just step on your foot and keep on walking.

Exactly. I can see why people don't like the guy... but even when he gives away Stanley Cup Champion rings to EVERYONE in the Bruins organization, we had a thread here with people complaining that he didn't offer to pay the taxes that people had to pay when they received them.. It's ridiculous.

I was asking a question. I had/have an opinion, yes, but I was genuinely interested in getting others.
