You can only judge a player by what he's done. The best predictor of future success is past performance.
That is why everyone was totally right to call Datysuk a choking dog when he was 28 years old and had only scored 15 points in 42 playoff games.

Oiler fan here but Marner was Canada's best player all night & should have been named player of the game over McJesus although I totally get why.
Even before his 2 assists I was very impressed with the very smart plays he was making every shift & was not surprised he was reunited with McDavid for the last period & overtime. He was a beast all night.
Had a legit case to be tourney MVP, I think.

Sure. And Datsyuk was an exception. There are others who fall into the same category I'm sure but Datsyuk's the one who comes to my mind. But you can only go on what's happened before. I mean, John Druce went on an insane playoff tear and nobody predicted that.

Again, Marner has always had the talent to do it. Never in question. But he's never stepped up when it mattered. Some guys step up right away, some do it later and some never do. Even me being the critic of him that I've been have openly said - he could do it at any time. It's always a possibility with a player of that stature. But he has to SHOW IT.

And in this tournament he did.

There will always be questions on him - same as any player - and players constantly have to keep re-proving themselves every year. But at least now, he can point to this and say that he's done it. He's won on the biggest stage.

I don't know if this carries over to the playoffs. I'm still skeptical about him. But I'd feel a lot better about him now than I did before if I was a Leaf fan.

(* I am sure I will get a TON of backlash over this thread but... *)

I got so much grief over Marner. For years I said Marner should NOT be on Team Canada. For YEARS I was ridiculed.

I heard how good he is. How you cannot leave those points at home. How LOTS of players bleep the bed in the playoffs but do wonderfully when playing for Canada.

Marner's NO LOOK pass 6 on 5... WOW!

We lost possession and the next thing you know, it was 3-1. What was Marner thinking? Oh yeah, as usual, he wasn't thinking.

I hope we get a 2nd shot at the U.S. Pick up some momentum against Finland and win the GMG.

He warned us.

God damn Last Ditch Mitch.

This is why you don’t evaluate players on single games or even single plays. He was on the team for a reason, and just showed everyone why. Hopefully this silences his critics about his ‘big game’ ability.

...so you can evaluate them on WINNING games where they were fantastic, and Marner was last night, but not the others where he was poor??...isn't that exactly what you're telling others not to do??... :dunno:

...Marner showed last night that he can be a BIG GAME GUY and I'm as happy for him as anyone, but his critiques from the previous games were still valid...

Who says I don’t criticize a bad game from him? I’m a leaf fan, of course I do. But I don’t pretend that one bad game represents that player. Look at the body of work. When leafs nation vilified the guy for a bad series against Boston and wanted him out, I was a supporter. Why? Because I know he’s better than that. Then he comes back and is arguably our mvp this year.

...last night's Marner was one of the best players in the World, that's not in question...the problem with Marner is that he HAS the talent to be THAT GUY every night; imo, that's where much of Marner's criticism comes from...intensity & involvement...imo, anyway...

I see you have EDITED your post since he set up McDavid.

I thought he had a pretty average tournament other than the OT winner against Sweden, except that great final game vs USA. :thumbu:

Mitch Marner is probably the best passer and set up guy in the world, he'd be the best the Americans have in that regard if he were from there.

I thought Marner started slowlyy. Gave puck away, avoid contact. Cooper did a great job, moved him down the roster. IMO guy was trying to do too much.
But in the final, he did have a great game, got two big assists.

I really just think a line with McDavid/Marner/Reinhart was the issue.

Reinhart had a bad tourney (still a good player), but also, that line would pass too much and not have enough pace to get in on the forecheck.

I think Marner would have looked better from the start if he was with Point/McDavid, Point really helped bring that line together by using his speed and getting in on the forecheck.

A lot of shuffling lines to find the best combos, and I think they ended up with it at the end, good job Cooper.

Maybe... but those caliber player, IMO should not need anorther guy to be at their top. What I did like with Marner, is that he became much better thru the tournament. I would not be surprise, Marner not being the same in Toronto. Playing with guys that have won, in a dressing room that have won alot, will have an impact.
