I thought the Jets played decently considering the juggernaut they were up against. The first period was disappointing, but IMO they controlled most of the play and out-chanced the Pens during the remainder of the game. As per usual, lacking in finish.

Pavelec: The second goal against was pretty weak. You have to make that save. First goal - juicy rebound, down and out. He gets way out of position on regular basis.

Hainsey: Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with his 74 mph slapper. 34 goals in 550+ games? Yeah, I can believe it. It's now been something like 65-70 games since he scored a goal. Overpaid relative to contribution.

Bogo: Love this guy.

Kane: Unimaginative. Chip and chase. Overpaid relative to contribution.

Wellwood: What happened to the guy that played last year? I think we are learning why a guy with his offensive talents could barely find a place to play last season. He capable of one hell of a disappearing act.

Buff: Since returning from injury he is not as dominant as before.

A lot of that is due to coaches figuring us out. Buff is ineffective on the PP beacuse the other teams are cheating by moving their two forwards close to the defenders. This jams up the one timers and creates turnovers. Our wingers need to move up a bit, and receive a pass off the half boards. Now it's basically a 3 on 2. But we don't do that.

Coaches also know that Pavelec just cant stay upright.

Your team played well. I thought you were the better team in the 2nd and 3rd period but the BS interference call in the 3rd which was magnified by a legitimate penalty soon afterwords really hurt you in the end.

Tangradi played well and was physical but like other Pens fans mentioned he doesn't play that way all the time. Maybe your coach can get through to him and get him to though. If he does then you'll have a good depth guy.

Pretty much my thoughts.

With Kane, that's really one of those 'leopard doesn't change his spots' arguments. Has Kane ever made a creative play? His game is simple by design, he just doesn't have the vision and patience to do anything other than chip and chase, make headlong rushes into 3 defenders, or throw it at the net.

Hainsey's pay relative to contribution gets debated ad nauseum around here, at $3M actual pay ($4.5 cap hit, but who the hell cares) he's not overpaid in my eyes. Haven't been impressed with him the last few games, but hopefully with Bogo back it takes some pressure off. How the heck did he score those goals with Columbus and Atlanta, pinching in and firing wristers I assume? His slapper is pretty weak.

Just saw that 2nd goal on Pavs as I typed this. Yeah, that was a weak goal. Sure it was a 5 on 3, yeah it was James Neal, but still. You've got to stop those.

I have to agree, it was a BS call, but that's no excuse to take a bad tripping call. We don't stand much of a chance against Crosby/Malkin/Neal 5v3.

On that first goal pavs goes down butterfly, then gets a little bump from stu and decides to lay flat on his belly looking backwards at everyone fighting for the puck, that is some stupid **** right there. wow.

Figured us out how?

Where to begin?

That our PP consists of "getting it to buff" and passing back and forth on the blue line with no creativity?

That we don't forecheck unless the puck is already against the boards, we instantly collapse to the neutral zone?

That pavs has weaknesses that shouldn't be there? High side glove, back door play, and he flops around like a fish out of water?

Kane has net tunnel vision, so if you stack his side when he gets the puck it will almost certainly result in a turnover?

Plenty of changes coming next year, imo.

The most perplexing players for me on this team are Burmi and Little.

Burmi is a young player, with obvious defensive ability and awareness, but is also highly skilled. Works hard, competes, dazzles some nights, creates some chances but doesn't put up points. Simply walks around Letang last night, then fires it over the glass into the mesh. My wife thought Fleury gloved it, nope. Can't help thinking, you need to have a shot on goal on that play. He dazzles me and frustrates me within seconds.

Little works hard, too, is a bit small, but seems to be able to snipe on occassion. Seemed to play fine at RW, so i like that versitility with him. Burmi doesn't seem to be as good a winger as Little, or that isn't as good a use of Burmi's skills, imo. But Little lacks a true scorers mentality or 'scoring knack' at the pro level - unlike a Neal. You knew that either Malkin, Crosby or Neal were going to score on the 5on3 - one of them. They patiently moved the puck around for a quality chance. But the moment you start writing Little off, he'll score or create chances for others that leads to a victory.

I think we'll part ways with Clitsome, Hainsey, Antro, and Wellwood in the off-season or sooner.

But if this team finishes in the bottom 3 or 4 teams, i think there will be changes in the core of Burmi, Little, Wheeler, Buff or Pavy as well. There will need to be new blood in the room to take the team to the next level. Not a wholesale change, but one or two moved out to bring in new players (players, not picks). I don't think either Kane and Ladd would be moved this year, but that could happen too, i suppose.

Most of these could be correlated with not having a particularly good hockey team. I don't think any 'figuring out' is necessary. Tdoe42 more or less summed it up perfectly.

While I love every player in a Jets jersey.. I'm beginning to see that we need to trade these guys this deadline no matter where we stand in April. It'll be tough to see Antro and Hainsey go. We need a full rebuild and not a Leafs rebuild. They will have my support, regardless.

Little>Burmi, although I would like us to keep both guys, I see burmi as more of a bottom 6 guy, an energry line player/pker. The guy simply does not put up points, on any level.

Also just curious, but if we get rid of hainsey who is gonna step up to fill that role?

After this road trip , we could realistically be 6 or more games under .500 , if that is the case then we may as I have said , have a change of direction.

Not just that we will be under water or not have a real chance to make the playoffs again , but that perhaps the management has seen enough to truly form their opinions on several players. If we were at the half way point , multiple games above .500 , sitting in 5th or 6th , then logically we could envision moving forward for the rest of the season with little change.

At some point there will be changes to the core if we continue to perform as we have. This is a results oriented business of course and if the results aren't there , then some players will suffer for that imo. I also have said , as for assett management , you want to take action before the value diminishes too much , and this is the call that Kevin Cheveldayoff will have to make , and likely fairly soon. Our C position is just is not providing enough to make this team a playoff team imo. That really is on Jokinen and Burmistrov , Little could be better but has not been the weakest link there by far , and we may indeed need to finish in the bottom 6 or draft there to be accurate in order to rectify that. If so , then short term pain for long term gain , and unfortunately we should be looking at next year and managing assets in that vein , imo.

Not part of the solution ? then you are part of the problem and best to move those players when they have as much value as possible and before you get more diminished returns for them ,again imo.

Production from Jokinen and or Burmistrov would make a tangible difference , but I for one can't say I am counting on enough of that . I hope it happens , but will it? Lots to be answered the next few weeks as I see it. It will be interesting.

They may have to pick someone up in the offseason. If not, someone will have to learn to play on their off hand as the only other LHD is Stu and he's not a 2nd pairing guy. So it seems like Postma or Redmond would have to learn to play the left side.

I leave out Clitsome as he is nowhere close to being a 2nd pairing defender.

I was at the game and I never wanted to say this ever but we all have to admit that the Jets are just not that good. Hopefully after this year when all the useless contracts are up, management can finally put a stamp on this team. Hainsey, Antropov, Clittsome, Wellwood, and Miettinen will all be gone.

To what end?..

Are these contracts preventing TN from picking up someone new?.. Are these contracts the reason the team is ****?... Are these contracts mandatory to be in the lineup every night and holding someone else back from playing?..

I don't see how or why this team will become instantly better once these guys' contracts expire. And forgive me from jumping to conclusions, but Chevy doesn't seem like a guy who will overpay for a bunch of guys in free agency.

I guess us fans better get used to a mediocre team then. Remember when they said they want to build through the draft? Then that means we won't see the playoffs for a long time. Just ask Edmonton. Although they should make it this year.

I guess I just don't see why that argument is constantly brought up on these boards with Antro, Hainsey and any other contracts close to coming off the books.

Other than Scheif it doesn't seem like there's many guys on the Rock who have any reasonable chance of being a nightly staple in the lineup. Looking at our waiver pickups and FA signings doesn't inspire much confidence either. And like I said earlier I can't see Chevy making a huge splash in the off-season free agent market.

IMO Hainsey at a better price doesn't have to go. Much like he took charge in the bargaining and was not afraid to be vocal , I think he provides that in regards to players being held accountable by their own.

At a fair price he can be an asset imo. No use moving someone unless you get fair value or better back in return . I would not move him just to do that , like the others you have mentioned.

Building through the draft is the most overused phrase in hockey, every team says that, thing is just because you trade for players doesn't mean you give up all your draft picks. Which top teams weren't build on trades, the Kings picking up Richards and Carter helped win them the Stanley Cup last season.

Unfortunately I don't see the Jets making a big trade for Perry and Getzlaf (just an example). I would love to be proved wrong though.

Well if there is a good season to suck it is this one. Short and a good draft pool. I will continue to be entertained by individual games, knowing playoffs are not going to happen. Looking to October already. Sigh.

I agree. I'm fine with losing pretty much anyone as long as their replacement is better.

Honestly, if we had league average goaltending this year we wouldn't even be having this discussion. We'd be talking about how we are 3rd in the conference :)
