Swingers, popular overseas, will be debuting this month at Woodbine. I don't believe this has been attempted at any North America track prior. Basically, picking 1-2, 1-3 or 2-3 successfully cashes. Exactas work with first and second in a specific order. I am not fully versed on the option but playing the order successfully with the top three finishers in some capacity as mentioned is paramount.

Belmont (New York):
  • Dylan Davis rode three winners.
Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Race 5: Tiz Herself (Raul Mena/John Rigattieri) was sent off 1-to-9 and won as expected. The trainer, in his 70s and who has been active since the 1960s, is a remarkable 35% in 2023. He trains mostly at Tampa Bay and Delaware. He enjoyed much success in New England in racing days past. "Solid horseman" as is said of the exceptional trainers.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts (jockey) and Larry Smith (trainer) teamed three times and each horse sent out returned a winner. Ouzts will be 69 years of age next month. He is the 5th winningest rider in North America history.
1685673673770.png
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Luis Saez rode a natural hat trick en route to a 3-win day.
  • Race 1: Call Me Andy (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh), a $260,000 Maryland-bred, made his debut impressively.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Swingers/Omni: The wagering option, available in Europe, made its North America debut (I do believe), Basically, you pick two horses and they must finish in the top three in some order. Payouts are low. The pools seem to be in the $800-1,000 range.

This is believed to be in response to the rash of breakdowns.

  • Michael Matz, best known for training Barbaro and off-the-track heroics in saving lives as a passenger in the 1989 Sioux City plane crash that killed over 100 people, won at both Penn National and Pimlico. Since May 24, he is 7 3-2-2.
1685788285675.png
Belmont (New York):
  • Ruben Silvera, a Parx rider, went back-to-back including a 23-to-1 shot winner.
Penn National (Pennsylvania):
  • Card: 11 races, six stakes.
  • Handle: $4.5 million which set a track record.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. who rode earlier in the day at Belmont, rode three times tonight and won twice.
  • Race 6: Major Dude (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $400,000 Grade 2 Penn Mile. As called by Larry Collmus, "I'm not done yet" as Major Dude fell back but recovered before stepping on the gas and roaring to victory. A 3-year-old son to the young sire Bolt d'Oro, and a multiple graded stakes winner, Major Dude cost $550,000 at auction.

Delaware Park (Delaware):
  • Jeremy Rose rode four times and finished with three winners. Rose is riding at a 27% win clip this year.
  • Brittany Russell sent out two horse, both with Jeremy Rose on board, and was a perfect 2-for-2. She had a 3-win day with a victory in Maryland.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 9: Night Effect (Reylu Gutierrez/Riley Mott) won the MSW as the longest shot on the board at 19-to-1. Mott is the son to Hall-of-Famer Bill Mott and this victory was the ninth in his career. His father had two starters in this race.
  • Meet Leaders: Luis Saez is the runaway leader among all riders with 28 wins. The trainers' title is close with Dale Romans (11), Brad Cox (11), Steve Asmussen (10) and Brendan Walsh (10) in the top four. Good to see Romans, a former Eclipse Award winner as Outstanding Trainer of the Year, having some success after a pitiful 9% strike in 2022. He also made news in the past year or so by losing 140 pounds.
1685788932303.png
  • Ellis Park to Host Conclusion of the Meet: Due to the deaths of twelve horses at the meet and following meetings with various racing interests, it has been announced that after Sunday's racing, the remainder of the Churchill Downs meet will be transferred to Ellis Park which is also owned by CD. The track is located just inside the Kentucky at the Indiana border. The meet will run from June 10 until July 2. There does not seem to be a common denominator as to the cause of deaths. The perplexing situation has exceeded the realm of optimism and powers that be will have to meet the challenges and challengers that await.
Per Bloodhorse:
The fatalities at Churchill Downs occurred on the dirt track and turf course, in racing and during training. One accident occurred in the paddock. At least three of the equine fatalities are not breakdowns—the paddock accident and two sudden deaths during or shortly after races on the turf course. Churchill Downs Suspends Meet; Dates to Shift to Ellis

1685750042682.png

Santa Anita (California):
  • Juan Hernandez won for four different trainers en route to a 7 4-0-2 day.
  • Umberto Rispoli had a 2-win day aboard three mounts. Both wins were on turf.
Epsom Downs (England):
  • Soul Sister (Frankie Dettori/John Gosden) upset a 5-to-6 favorite and gave the rider his seventh Epsom Oaks winner. Dettori is expected to retire by the end of the year.

50 years ago, one of the greatest moments in sports history, one of the most descriptive sports photo ever taken: Secretariat at Belmont. Up there with the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team's Gold Medal as one of the most unifying efforts in all of sport.

A couple of growing jackpots at Pimlico awaits. Brittany Russell has a former Bob Baffert runner that cost $550,000 at auction looking to break his maiden today
  • The 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot soared to $496,821.98 for Saturday's program after going unsolved for a 13th consecutive racing day Friday at historic Pimlico Race Course.
  • The Jackpot Super High Five went unsolved for an eighth straight racing day Friday, bringing the carryover to $475,656.86 for Saturday. A total of $37,939 was bet into Friday's Jackpot Super High Five on top of a $459,622.70 carryover from Sunday's program, producing multiple winning tickets worth $1,338.10. The wager was last hit for a $10,383.50 payout May 14 at Pimlico.

Belmont (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode four winners. He has 185 wins this year which is 55 better than his closest challenger.
  • Race 7: Redistricting (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown), a $200,000 purchase in England two years ago, debuted nicely to victory today. Owned by sharp owners Klaravich Stables which excels in New York. Redistricting won going away by more than four lengths.

  • Race 9: Kalik (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) wired the field and won the Grade 2 $200,000 Pennine Ridge Stakes. A 3-year-old son to Connected bred in Canada, Kalik was sold at auction for $200,000. It seemed rider and trainer had a feverish talk following the race, but not acrimonious. Interesting as to what was said.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Samy Camacho rode three winners. He is one of eight riders with 100+ wins in North America this year.
  • Race 4: Nothins Free (Paco Lopez/Jim Noble) gave the trainer his ninth win in 2023. Noble sent a horse out at the meet for the first time. He is Parx-based. He has been training since the 1970s and has had 10+ wins just three times and just once since 1985. A Renaissance year perhaps for 2023. It is inspiring to see a small-stable trainer gaining such success.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Race 9: Freeze the Fire (Jorge Ruiz/Cathal Lynch), the lone first-time starter in the race -- a favorite betting option as mentioned often -- won at 14-to-1 and topped Dillinger (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) who was a $550,000 purchase at auction and transferred from the Bob Baffert-barn. The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot returned over $547,000, a gigantic sum for one lucky bettor.
  • Race 7: Wudi (Jevian Toledo/Michael Matz), sold at auction for $775,000 and once under the hands of Bob Baffert, broke his maiden today. Since May 24, Matz is 8 4-2-2.
1685875349944.png
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Race 2: A $1 trifecta returned more than $5,200. The $1 super paid over $25,000.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: Six of the 11 races were stakes including four graded.
  • Florent Geroux-Brad Cox teamed to go back-to-back in graded stakes.
  • Luis Saez, the meet's top rider, won three times but failed to hit the board with three starters in graded stakes.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 8: Window Shopping (Hector Berrios/Richard Mandella) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Summertime Oaks Stakes.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 7: Our Flash Drive (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $175,000 Grade 2 Royal North Stakes
  • Race 8: Super Hoity Toity (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Belle Mahone Stakes.

Now that the Pick 6 was hit for more than $500,000, the Pick 5 pool is available for a similar total. Today is the last day of racing at Pimlico. Racing resumes at Laurel on June 9.

There will be a carryover of $490,727.68 in the Jackpot Super High Five for Sunday, which takes place in Race 6. The Jackpot Super High Five went unsolved for a ninth straight racing day Saturday, producing multiple winning tickets worth $1,233.20 after $36,484 was wagered on top of a $475,656.86 carryover from Friday.
If there is no ticket with all five finishers in exact order, the entire pool will be carried over to the next day's Jackpot Super High Five. Similar to the Rainbow 6, on days when a mandatory payout is scheduled the entire pool is shared by those holding tickets with the most winners.

Here is today's card.

It’s close to that number for me.

When the story is told in the ESPN documentary that Jack Nicklaus was watching the race in his underwear in a hotel room and he started crying when the race was won and he didn’t know why.

“All of your life, in your game, you’ve been striving for perfection,” CBS’ Heywood Hale Broun told him. “At the end of the Belmont, you saw it.”

Churchill is systematically killing horse racing.

From the fiascos of Arlington Park and Calder.
To the problems the last few years with their turf
course and now to their present situation.
They are a blight on horse racing.
Nothing good comes from them.

Are they owned by PETA and are trying to make
horse racing go the path of dog racing?

With a ”leader” of an industry like Churchill.
Do you really need enemies?

Belmont (New York):
  • Manny Franco rode four winners and each was for a different trainer. He finished 8 4-2-1.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 10: Hoku (Jose Gomez/Jim Noble) gave the trainer his 10th win in 2023. Noble sent a horse out at the meet for the second straight day at has won with both, He is Parx-based. He has been training since the 1970s and has had 10+ wins just three other times and just once since 1985. A Renaissance year perhaps for 2023. It is inspiring to see a small-stable trainer gaining such success. (As stated in yesterday's review).
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Closing Day: Today was the final day of racing at the Baltimore track until September. Upcoming Maryland race dates:
Laurel
6/9/2023-8/20/2023
Timonium
8/25/2023-9/4/2023
Pimlico
9/8/2023-10/1/2023
Laurel
10/5/2023-12/31/2023
  • Leading Jockey: Jevian Toledo with 19 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Brittany Russell with 15 wins which was 10 more than her nearest rival. It is her fourth training title. She won Laurel's 2022 spring and fall standings and tied for first at last year's Preakness Meet. All hail Brittany!
1685923027539.png
  • Race 8: A DQ that seemed unjustified...and yes, I had the original winner and at a handsome price of 6-to-1! Grrrrr.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: The $.20 Pick 6 was nailed for more than $263,000. That is approximately $750,000 at two Stronach Group tracks for two substantial payouts in consecutive days.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: Oscar Eclipse (Tyler Gaffalione/Brian Lynch) won the $120,000 MSW at 7-to-1. The race concluded the Churchill Downs part of the meet which now switches to Ellis Park where racing will be held through August 30.

  • Race 9: Henrietta Topham (James Graham/Geoff Mulcahy) won the $225,000 Grade 3 Mint Julep Stakes. That is most likely the first graded stakes winner for the small-stable trainer who has had his license since 2001.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 4: Halosnheaven (Joe Bravo/Bob Baffert) broke her maiden in her third try. The daughter to Curlin finished second in two prior starts. Curious how often Bravo has ridden for Baffert.
  • Race 8: Geaux Rocket Ride (Ramon Vazquez/Ricahard Mandella) won the $100,000 Affirmed Stakes. He won for the second time in three lifetime starts, The 3-year-old son to Candy Ride was purchased for $350,000 by OXO (Larry Best formerly of Boston Scientific) which can be considered a small sum for his horses.

Forgot about the turf course situation at Fairgrounds.

It is creepy that the unintended end of the meet coincided with a race named Arlington Stakes within hours of the Chicago Bears making news about Arlington Park. How that piece of land is anything but a horse track is not only an injustice but borderline criminal (euphemistically speaking).

On June 4, 1923, the 35-year-old jockey was competing in a steeplechase at New York’s Belmont Park. A horse trainer and long-time stableman, Hayes had never won a race before and no one expected him to take the first spot that day while riding a 20-1 outsider named Sweet Kiss, a horse owned by Miss A.M. Frayling.
The odds didn’t seem to bother Hayes. What did seem to bother him was his heart.
Sometime during the race, the Hayes suffered a heart attack and died instantly. However, he didn’t fall off of his horse. In fact, he remained in the saddle for the rest of the race and actually crossed the finish line first, winning by a head.
Despite the fact that he had died at some point while still on the track, no one was aware that anything had gone wrong until Miss Frayling and the officials went to congratulate Hayes, only to find out he was no longer alive.
