I have never liked Hutchinson.... until now. This is amazing.

Clutch Hutch is positionally sound. He isn’t flopping all over the place but keeping his upper body nice and tall in the butterfly and his arms in tight and square to the puck. He is really calm and tracking the puck exceptionally well. My only gripe is he didn’t play with the Felix Potvin mask yet
He looked solid and was moving across and squaring up well, nice blocer saves from in close, that save on Kahun at the start of the second, stopped a tough deflection, then strecthed out for a hard rebound, was a highlight reel. Moved right across the crease with McDavid on his mini-break. Has he gone through some kind of quick development, looks a legit #2.

People might have disliked Hutch before but you gotta give it to him, he’s done the job as a third string goaltender. Literally can’t ask for anything more.

Remember that Hutchinson has a long history of having huge swings between hot and cold. He's not someone to make long term plans around. But when he's on I think he's even capable of winning a playoff series.

If he went on waivers he's already shown too much, he'd be gone.

That seems reasonable. The hope would have to be that teams are hesitant about the year left on the contract. It's a concern that likely wasn't there previously.

Imagine if these 2 had D....

Anyone else remember after the Potvin fight vs Hex. Someone on the air plane went to walk past Potvin. Then Domi Clark or Gilmour. Stand up and go, if you want to get to rocky you have to go threw me.

Hockey isn’t forever. Leafs goalie Michael Hutchinson finds his sweet spot in rebound season | The Star

hutchinson-mask.jpg

From journeyman to hero to free agent to Maple Leaf redux. Although the common refrain to that was: Wait, what?

Except Hutchinson has been pretty stalwart in his Second Coming: 3-1 through four starts as both starting and backup goaltending was thrown into disarray by injury, with a 1.77 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Campbell was in and back out again, re-aggravating a leg injury in his 4-0 appearance against the Oilers on Saturday. Andersen, mended from his lower-body ailment, took the cage in Edmonton on Wednesday as the Leafs continue to grind through an eight-day road trip out west. Hutchinson will likely get the call Thursday in Vancouver.

Here’s a compelling stat: Last season, Toronto’s backup goaltending was 7-12-2, with a 3.47 GAA and .891 save percentage. This season entering Wednesday: 6-1-0, 1.58 GAA and .946 save percentage.

What’s the big diff for Hutchinson?

Well, he didn’t waste his time, focusing on his soft spots under the tutelage of goalie coach Jussi Parkkila in Colorado and working with Steve Briere and Jon Elkin over the balance of his time in Toronto, between the Leafs and the Marlies, before that.

“We realized that I was at my most successful when I moved on my feet, stayed on my feet as much as possible,” Hutchinson explains. “In Colorado, one of the big things was Jussi telling me to read the play. If you have a lot of time in between games, as a goalie sometimes you get too puck-focused, watching the puck when it’s in dead zones. You don’t really look off the puck to see where the other guys are and what angle they’re shooting with. When you’re playing a lot, it just happens, you get the flow of it. When you’re not, it’s something you have to remind yourself, because it’s a good habit.”

Probably not that simple. And most assuredly, rediscovering self-confidence in the playoffs is significant. It helps, as well, that the Barrie-born Hutchinson is calm by nature, psychically predisposed to roll with the punches in a career that has dragged him across a dozen cities in five leagues. He’s been further grounded by marriage and fatherhood, wife Jenna expecting the couple’s second child in July, and nearly two-year-old Lilah at home. Which has been Winnipeg — Jenna owns a bakery there — although the family will be reconvening in Toronto for the new baby’s birth.

“You’re able to escape hockey and just enjoy the real moments in life,” says Hutchinson. “And you can take that to the rink. You realize your hockey career isn’t forever, so you enjoy every moment you have coming to the rink. Good days, bad days, enjoy every opportunity that you get.”

He’s lovin’ it, all of these days. And nobody’s hatin’ on him anymore either.

The Spirit of Felix Potvin is Strong. We have one goalie who wears a Potvin mask in practice and one who plays like he did in his prime in actual games (Campbell)

ironically Campbell who was acquired from LAK was one of the teams where Potvin revitalized his career and stole many playoff games during his time there, outdueling Chris Osgood in the first round and even gave Patrick Roy and the Avalanche (the eventual Stanley Cup winners that year) a run for their money in the second round over 7 games

I'm actually enjoying the Felix Potvin talk...

He was my idol as a kid... Like seriously. I would cry when he had a bad game and would defend him no matter what, I even disliked Cujo for awhile for replacing him.

It was his mask and the fact that they called him Felix the Cat Potvin.. I loved the show Felix the cat and seeing a goalie look cool in hockey gear and playing with his style just made it a perfect match.. I even copied his "unorthodox glove hand facing upwards" style when I played Street hockey.

Its been long enough and I just want to see hutch actually wear the mask In a game one time...

I still get dopamine rushes seeing that gorgeous Potvin mask design.

Hutch playing good now he just needs to look good.

Ditch the current crappy pads and mask.

Time to make the Potvin tribute mask permanent, get some blue pads without Leafs logos plastered everywhere.
