Post-Game Talk: I don't have a creative title

Dude, silly shit is acting like the Rangers are the 92 or 93 Ottawa Senators every time they play a game where they get outplayed 5 on 5. I was pissed last game because they got caved against a terrible Blue Jackets team in the third period (the first two were pretty good). They lost to one of the most talented offenses in the league and looked clueless defensively at times. But that happens against that team. They lost in a skill competition. And if Igor was the reason we got a point what about Samsonov? He was making difficult saves all night. Panarin should have scored in OT to win the game and he robbed him. Just one example.
I say that because you're smart enough to understand where the "analytics people" are coming from and you're choosing not to because you're in the mood to argue tonight.

They look like the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Rangers. That’s the problem. Well right now they look even worse than that. Both those teams had over 100 points and the 2015-16 team had a really long winning streak as well. Where did that get them.

The 2015-16 team is the team that made me stop taking point totals seriously. And yeah, I know how that sounds, but I stand by it. The 2015-16 Rangers were one of the worst teams in the league.

I feel like you're the one arguing tonight. This team was one that the entire board thought was in a transition year and not a real contender. Their #1 pick is having a breakout year and just had one of the best games of his career. Not one word about that in the entire postgame thread. Everything about how this is the worst team ever.

That 16-17 team makes it to the ECF with not a braindead coach behind the bench.

Ok, fine.

Lafreniere is a very exciting player and has an amazing moustahce.

Are you satisfied with that?

Definitely the latter. I said it last year too.

It's kind of a freezing cold take that they're not a top 5 team and that's without really digging into it.

So why are you flying off the handle every time the Rangers don't play a great game? I got my hopes up early in the season and I'm crazy and irrational. What's your excuse?

I'm not irrational, I'm just crazy.

And I'm not flying off the handle. I'm just letting some of the people who like to bully others for any criticism of the team that they're outta pocket.

You're also outta pocket.

The guy who shits on goaltending even more than I do, which is like scoring more than Gretzky, and has absolutely been at the forefront of goaltending being bullshit since 2011, wants to draw a comparison between goaltending and quarterbacking in the NFL.

C'mon man.

That is the weakest shit you've ever brought and I am so disappointed.

You shit on goaltending because you think it's unimportant. I don't think it's unimportant even though I've moved in that direction the last few years. That said this whole horror at the team playing well because a guy that should be by all accounts one of their best and most important players is playing well is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry goaltending is a roster spot and one that sometimes has an outsized impact on winning. You said 13 games is a tiny sample size. Frankly 16-28 games is not much bigger. Getting great goaltending and winning a cup is not shocking in that context. And once again Igor SHOULD be having a large impact on our winning NHL games.

Yes, goaltending is a roster spot and sometimes has an outsized impact on winning.

The quarterback has an outsized impact on winning EVERY SINGLE GAME. It's the single most important position in team sports. In a sport where you have to win four games, instead of sixteen.

A hockey team that's only good because their goalie is good is flawed. A football team that's only good because their quarterback is good is called a football team.

Honestly, you've flown off the handle way before the QBing comparison. A hockey team with great goaltending and weaker skaters is flawed. Just like a hockey team with great skaters and awful goaltending. Literally every team in the league is flawed. Ther are no 2001 Avs or 2002 Red Wings anymore. Would I prefer a team that dominates every game 5 on 5? Of course. But reading after every game where we were outplayed 5 on 5 how this is one of the worst teams in the league is REALLY REALLY old. And I know I contribute to it myself sometimes, but that's usually in games where we don't get a point against a good team. It's just absurd reading how we're one of the worst teams in the league but for that sneaky goaltender. As if that position doesn't exist. You're constantly beating the "goaltending is voodoo" drum but somehow then you credit goaltending to the Rangers' 220 games of what 0.667 points percentage or so? Which is it?

Again, the complaints about getting outplayed 5v5 get really old not because of the comments, but because that's almost every game.

As for your question, I think I've been pretty clear about this. Goaltending is important but it has been proven to be unreliable in the playoffs. I'm just stating facts.

They must be doing something right. Their record can be 1st overall in the league by Monday, 61 games into the season, despite the following.......

1. Until the past month, Igor was playing like a middle of the pack NHL goalie.
2. Our #1 center has 19 goals in 61 games and has been invisible 5v5 most of the season.
3. Fox missed a dozen games with an injury.
4. Serious regression from Kakko and Miller
5. Chytil missing all but 10 games this year.
6. Goodrow putting up point totals like Dale Purinton.
7. Our 3rd line center is a career AHLer
8. Subpar seasons by Trouba and Lindgren

Yet here we are, on the cusp of a potential Presidents Trophy or at worst home ice advantage in 2 playoff rounds.

For a flawed team they are top 1/3 in GF/G and GA/G, top 10 in PP and PK. Doesn't sound so flawed. You and other always look at 1 side of the coin and it doesn't mean that you are right.

I don't remember you saying goaltending is important before? But whatever I'll take your word for it.

The thing is I could buy the GA/G being worse than it looks because of goaltending. But apparently this team can't pass on an NHL level but are 9th in the NHL in GF/G. I guess every goal must come off a faceoff win and the guy who gets control of the puck skates around the entire defense by himself and scores.
