Does it not give pause to anyone that the first overall pick is compared, not only to a 5th overall, but also to a late 2nd rounder?

Sigh.

Is kinda depressive.... We would not have this discussion with any others first overall. Still believe Slaf would prove us all wrong. I just don't see him as a 90pts player. Maybe around 70-85 in his prime.

But I see Jiricek and Nemec as potential norris D and Cooley as a PPG forward... sigh.

Never thought I'd see a Habs player with a worse nick name than Jiri Sekac's "cakes"...but this "Rainmaker" might beat that out lol

To answer the question.

I'll take the player with the highest upside.

Slafkovsky.

You're reaching.

Should the thread starter have compared him to another 1st overall pick on this roster?

Cause, there are none as i'm sure you're aware.

Galchenyuk has entered the chat.
Galchenyuk was a 3rd overall and he was pretty far ahead of any 2012 2nd rounder in his D+1 or 2013 5th overalls.

No, the comparison between any other prospects in our pool should be so out of left field that wed just laugh at the thought.

Instead, we got people picking, rightfully, a 5'8 67th overall and a 5th overall.

The kid was the wrong pick and the kid is being developped badly, thats the story.

well I think it's out of left field personally but either way, it's just a question on a message board, not an evaluation of said players.

It ain't that deep man.

that's YOUR story.

Lol, it is that deep. Can you name me one time in history a 1st overall in his d+1 was compared to a 5th overall in his D year and a late 2nd rounder in his d+1 and had a 50/50 toss up in value?

Im guessing it hasnt happened often.

I mean, these are very specific parameters you've set forth lol

But I promise you, this isn't the first or last time, fans from an NHL team who picked a player 1st overall lost all confidence in said player because he wasn't an all start right off the rip.

Go scour the Devils board 2-3yrs ago after they drafted Nico Hischier, go take a look at the Rangers board with Lafrenière or Oilers board with Yakupov and/or RNH (pre 100pt season)

Hot takes aren't exactly in short supply on message boards.

Fans say things, often for shock value…it holds no weight with what is actually happening on the ice.

Hutson is the unsullied jewel of the Montreal Canadiens prospect pool.

Come back in 2-3 years when we’ve had a chance to see him for all his strengths and weaknesses...

See how quickly things change

Reinbacher > Hutson > Slaf.

I have the impression Slaf will always be below average on hockey sense/decision making and he's shown not knowing how to really use his big body.

A mix between McCarron and Glachenyuk. Big body that rarely separates guys from pucks with a good one timer and occasional nice dekes but very limited otherwise.

Sure do hope i am wrong and will be patient though.

Lots to unload here. One, were talking one year. There is reasons to be dissatisfied with Alexis growth after three years, his first year was not bad.

Secondly, the all-star part is straight dishonesty on your part, stop that. Nobody expected all-star levels from Slaf. Or even any first overall ever save for like one every ten years.

Its funny that you bring up Hischier though, and Im not sure you understand how bad you just dug your hole here. 2017 and 2022 are pretty much directly correlated. A first overall phenom that fell, a mid top ten euro that got picked first overall, a defender that is the best player in the draft, another one that is probably the 2nd best and a small forward that is worth more than the first overall pick. See, its not that Nicos a bad player, hes a very good player, and of course probably a better player than Slaf will ever be. (And to be completely honest in the argument, so is Makar compared to anyone else in the 2022 draft.) The problem is that at minimum three players picked directly after him are flat out better players. Theres no Devils fans that would pick Nico ahead of the other three players, and you know what? Trading down to pick Suzuki couldve yielded much better results.

With that said, even in Nicos case, he was still worth more than anyone else after his d+1 season.
