Lie. It was the finnish team that complained about Ulf Samuelsson.

And one has to question a player's intelligence, when he tries to enter a tournament for a country in which he doesn't hold a valid passport.

Swedish Olympic officials didn't realize that Samuelsson had dual citizenship until a Swedish journalist found out and made an inquiry. Once it was discovered, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation reported it to the IIHF.
"It was very honest of them to do this," IIHF spokesman Paolo Ianieri said.

The rule that was broken was Sweden's not the IIHF's.

He had passports for both countries..

The federation ruled after learning that Samuelsson has valid passports from both the United States and Sweden. Under Swedish law, a person surrenders his citizenship when he becomes the citizen of another country.

Uhm, as far as I'm concerned.. the law is different nowadays.

We are allowed to have dual citizenship, aren't we? I plan on getting a canadian or an american one beautiful day to go along with my swedish one. And a friend of mine lives in Vancouver and is trying to get a canadian citizenship to go along with his swedish.

funny thing is there are countries in the world that lets you have triple citizenship.

a friend of a friend (and so on) .. had australian+canadian+english citizenship! (if this isn't possible, let me know)

Arent all of those countries in the Commonwealth though? Maybe there are different laws there?

Commonwealth = English speaking countries or the ones formerly under the Queens rule.

Like: England, Australia, India are in the Commonwealth. I think Canada and Pakistan are too but Im not sure.

Yes. Depending on which the other country is.

I know two who have swedish/tunisian and a whole lot who have swedish/finnish and a couple who in addition to their swedish citizenship hold a british passport.

The problem is though (i believe) if you are a born swede or only have swedish citizenship, you have to gain the citizenship of the 2nd country, in most (all?) cases that means you have to live there for 2+ years.

(talk about going OT :D)
 
i want a canadian one too.

quick, somebody find me a cute chick that i can marry, just like the movie (even though thats about the u.s) "green card" .. with gerard depardieu and andie macdowell ;)

To be honest Sweden don't need them, they got a good team as it is, with lot's of new and young talent...
