Well, they set up the question to ask if he knew that was Phaneuf in front of him. Basically he said his emotions were running high, so he wound up as hard as he could, knowing he was either going to get the goal or sting Phaneuf. And he was OK with either one.

Also, imagine how pissed off Toronto would be if Kadri actually blocked the shot with that kamikaze dive. There's no way that would have ended well for him, but then again, he probably wasn't expecting a shot like that on an empty net.

Those guys are perpetual losers until they come to Toronto and act like they're superstars. Don't like Phaneuf, but I don't like the Leafs getting showed up by a garbage team and garbage players like that!

How are people mad at Staal you ask?

They're winning 3-1, net is empty, and he chooses a slapper to seal it from 10 feet in front, with Phaneuf standing in the way. If that slapper was 5cm to the left, it would hit Dion's shin, and could EASILY hurt him.

Would we be this mad if something like that happened against the Canes? A player is standing in front of an open net, isn't that totally on the player deciding to stand right there? Any player in Eric's situation is going to try to score as surely as possible. Emphatically or not.
