What a great game to attend in person. Enjoyed the heck out of the goals, had a really good, intelligent conversation with fans sitting all around about the inconsistency of the officiating during the quiet moments when the place wasn’t stupid loud….

Loved seeing the new guys coming along and settling in a bit. If there is any true follow through and it’s not completely just blowing smoke so he is just saying what he thinks everyone wants to hear, if he plays to even 80% of his past level and is engaged, this is going to be a massive steal of a trade. We got him for basically nothing and at half price. Kuzy at less than $4M to play our second line center is a freaking cheat code if he keeps the effort level up the rest of the way through his current contract….Guentzel will figure it out and will contribute. I have no concerns he won’t find some chemistry with someone and chip in… he’s looked good so far and could easily already have quite a few more.. we paid more for Guentzel, but early signs look like we did very well at the deadline…. Loving it :)

Even though they lost 4-0, it’s very obvious how much better the Panthers are this year with defensive structure and locking down the middle of the ice in the d zone. They may have been trying to goon it up a bit tonight like last years team but they don’t need to do that every night as their only means of winning. They have a hell of a team that can skate reallly well and beat teams with their speed and commitment to forecheck and counter punch. Several teams have played really solid structured games against us and have scouted and watched enough video to give us fits with how well they keep us stuck as a perimeter team…. Dallas, LA did it to us, Rangers, St Louis…. The tape is out there showing how you can play us successfully.. but it takes the right team makeup and effort level. Once Florida got behind tonight they had to get away from their structure to try to catch up and we were on them tonight to take advantage of the open ice and odd man rushes…

Enough rambling.,. Such a fun game, came home in a great mood tired from cheering and high fiving everyone seated around us…

Oh…. Orlov really has looked like he is finally adapting to our system. It’s more instinctual but he also is finding the right balance of when to pinch and when to back off rather than just plow ahead and get burnt… there was a perfect example of it in the third where he allllllllmost threw caution to the wind and pinched hard when he didn’t have high forward help and it could have been a 3 on 1 easy the other way. He cut if off, fell back and broke up their break out…. Totally snuffed it out and pushed the puck back into the o zone for more time…. He’s going to be just fine as we go along here…. Chipping in offense, holding his own defensively…. Again, it’s such a cheat code having 3 d pairings that the coach has complete confidence in and plays equal minutes most nights.. 3 pairs getting about 20 min each every night Instead of Burns and Slavin having to play 27 min a night every night can only help us as we try to go deep in the playoffs…

NHL.com is a little slow to update, but I believe the Canes are now #4 in the league in GA/G. They’re right on L.A.’s tail for #3.
The defense has been on a nice little 5 game streak. We have given up 5 5v5 goals total and that includes the whoopsie goal by Andersen against Calgary and the “own goal” off of skjei’s skate against the rangers.

Good defense all around from the group. Pesce doesn’t look “cooked” and orlov is really clicking lately.

Pesce could have been dealing with a nagging LBI, never know, I don't think any player is ever 100% either though.

We're watching the best stretch of team defensive results of the Rod Brind'Amour era. Over the past 20 games, 36 goals against (1.8 per).

Looking at rolling 20 game stretches since 18-19, they touched 40 GA a few times in 2021. This is the first time in the 30s.

I always liked the idea of doubling down on our main identity as a team with Orlov last offseason. It's really paid off in recent games because our other two pairs has basically been on cruise mode as far as usage is concerned. Here's our TOI stats for our D tonight:

And for Tuesday's game vs. the Rangers:

It's no wonder why our defensive groups look so fresh at the end of games and play like they can play another period.

Since that Dec 12, right after the players only meeting the Canes have played 39 games, so almost 1/2 of a season.

Canes have the 4th best SV% (all situations) in the NHL as a team at .916. Only teams better are WPG: .925; SEA: .925; FLA: .919. Quite a turnaround.

Canes are 9th best in SH% (all situations) at 10.7%. TBL, VAN, COL, DAL, TOR, DET, BOS and EDM are the teams above them.

2nd best points %: .731 (EDM .744)
Best GA/GP at 2.15
6th best GF/GP at 3.38
3rd best PP% at 29.7%
Best PK% at 89.7%
Best 5v5 CF%
5th best 5v5 GF%
Best 5v5 xGF%
Best HDCA/60

The PP has slowed down as of late, but defense, goaltending and PK have gotten better.
