Yes, and I don not think we should be making excuses for Canadian markets.

No, we shouldn't be making excuses. That's why I was wondering if you knew the actual distance for both markets. I don't, which is why I was asking. I was wondering how much farther that Senators fans had to travel from downtown Ottawa to Canadian Tire Centre compared to how far Oilers fans had to travel from downtown Edmonton to Rexall Place.

I know the Senators arena is far away. That's why I initially said "let's see what happens when they get downtown."

So Karmanos is loyal to the NHL for many, many, many years and that’s why he’s going to blackmail the BoG on the way out the door?

That’s not how any of this works.

Karmanos is in the same inner circle that has bent over backwards for Glendale and Broward. He’s made it exceedingly clear, in both words and actions, that he’s in no hurry to get a deal done. He’s doubled and tripled down on promises to keep the team in Raleigh, with no threats to move it (compare to his behavior in Hartford). He’s giving Bettman all the time in the world to arrange a buyer. This doesn’t at all smell like a devious plan to spirit the team away, unless you want it to.

aside from continually lying about intentions and revenues, getting into bed with shallow pocket con-men, and regularly threatening to pack up and leave ... arrogantly extorting untold millions of dollars in subsidies over the years ... how exactly has the NHL bent over backwards for these municipalities?

let's be honest about how the league treats its city partners. it lies and cheats them.

And keeps their teams in place.

Business is ugly sometimes, but at a fundamental level the NHL is built around partnerships between owners and municipalities. They aren’t in the business of yelling “suckers!” and slipping out the back door in the middle of the night. It’s been 20 years since the last time the league allowed a team to just up and move because the owner felt like it.

yes, and at what cost and to whom?

surely you are not suggesting that the NHL has acted in good faith as a partner with the city of glendale. bettman, daly and the revolving cast of clowns and tire-kickers have all flat out lied to locals.

maybe you think bettman's increasingly regular "cough up or we leave" tour across the continent is a partnership, i think it's extortion.

Good faith? Certainly not.

But the fact that the Arizona Coyotes still exist is a pretty strong signal of where their bread is buttered.

Canes’ Karmanos mentioned among pro owners who benefited from Paradise Papers tax havens

So, Peter Karmanos is one of the tax dodgers profiting from the Paradise Papers secret tax havens. What a nice guy, defrauding the government.

Not that I’m defending him AT ALL, but “defrauding” isn’t the right word. Elected officials deliberately set up a government that would allow for those tax havens.

Important note — as recently discussed on the Canes board, Karmanos himself is a donor to election campaigns for tax-shelter-friendly officials.

That's okay n i. I just wondered if anyone knew off hand. I know Edmonton fans supported their team very well when the Oilers played out of Rexall Place.

Rexall Place and Northlands aren't terribly far away from each other. Probably about 3km apart. They're probably closer than the old Winnipeg Arena and BMP are.

Fans supported the team well in terms of ticket sales - they were all official sellouts during the decade of losing, though there were lots of days where in mid-winter, mid-week, with the team already well out of a playoff race, a lot of those tickets went unused.

It's seems that contrary to Greenberg, Quebecor can came up with the 500 Millions anytime

Une marge de manœuvre de 2 milliards pour Québecor

In short, Quebecors have liquidity of 2 billions, 713 millions in "cash or pseudo-cash". PKP say that in 2003, he will have never believed that he will have more flexibility then Bell, but now it's real, that give them many opportunity, that he will keep secret for now, but that he's working on...

Still no deal in place?

How long will this take before we know, one way or another?

 You guys are just mad that the locals, *of their own free will*, "cough up" and don't "leave". That last occurrence was a great week.

As a tourist, I went to both Edmonton and Ottawa during the 14-15 season. In Edmonton, I happened to stay in a hotel near the airport. If their new hockey arena was out there, too, that's pretty comparable to the bus trip I made from my downtown Ottawa hotel out to Kanata.

You can defend Ottawa and bash Florida and Arizona all you want, but it's the same problem.

It's closer to 6 KM. But yes, trekking out to Rexall was a chore in the last few years not only due to its awkward location but because of what had befallen the area over the last couple decades. Going out to eat or drink in the surrounding area was not just unpleasant but a risk to one's safety.

They got the donuts? Excellent....
it`s bad compared to boston and even nashville though. Ottawa does deserve to be in that group until playoff games are sold out, which they should be downtown.

Odd how attendance only went significantly down once they won the bid to build at Lebreton Flats. Do you think struggling attendance might make the various levels of government more receptive to helping out the Lebreton Flats development financially?

From a distance it seems like Karmanos is like the empty nest couple who can't decide when to downsize their house. They don't need so much space but its nice to have when the kids visit with the grand kids in the summer, they are still healthy so maintaining the house is not a problem, they have enough investment income so its not like they need the money, and they have so many great memories of the house. However, they know its something they have to do at some point because their arthritis will get worse making doing housework more difficult, they would like to travel more and not have to worry about the house, and they don't want the kids to have the burden of having to sell the house when they pass on.
