Or maybe Eric just got off to a slow start as usual and that had nothing to do with the coach, nor did his torrid pace to end the season?

And the fact the torrid pace started immediately after Maurice was fired is just a coincidence?

Does no one remember the start to that season? The players were, very obviously, playing to get Maurice fired. Eric, especially, looked like he couldn't give two ***** about the result of the game.

At least now, there's anger and frustration about the losses and goals against, even if none of it is being used constructively. Back then, there was just apathy a around. The players were just waiting for their new coach.

To me it's the philosophy of the team that may be the error. We have to decide whether long term to be star based or depth based. When we signed Eric and cam to their deals we had to let all the depth we had go. We've never replaced it, it had taken years to acquire in the first place. We overpay people to stay, it leaves us little room to fill out the team. Realistically we should be like the coyotes or Nashville, not tying themselves to one player, offensively anyway. Eric isn't a strong enough player to lead us offensively by himself, never has been. He would be perfect for a team with better scoring depth that didn't rely on him so much. We may never be a team that can rely on one player to lead us like that. The change won't happens for years without jr leaving. He's hitched our wagon to the staal/ward horses and will ride it till it's untradeable.

Anyways, that's been my theory since we signed Eric.
I agree with pretty much everything written here. That's what's so sad. I don't even know what the first move is to fix this, but I imagine it's has to do with hiring someone competent before the end of the year. Hopefully we can do that.

We have a lot of money tied up in a handful of players. If those players aren't playing to the level of their contracts, we're boned. We don't have sufficient depth in at least one area every season (it seems to be on rotation, this season it's offense) because so much money is devoted to so few players. That's the way Rutherford has constructed this team. He has to be held accountable for this shoddy, fragile group, but now seeing as he is part owner, it will probably have to take him recognizing how out of his element he is and handing over the reins to someone new.

our best staal may be playing in charlotte?
Right now, Jordan actually gives us our best bang for a buck so you're not far off.

As bad as I wanna scold Eric for his terrible play, he's at least looked somewhat dangerous offensively at times... I can't say the same for Jordan. He has been horrid all around.

I mean Jared, not Jordan. I can't edit. I've been a bad, bad poster.

Given Muller's postgame comments it would not shock me to see Murphy on Tuesday. Not that I think it'll end the nearly 200 minute even strength scoreless drought.

It couldn't hurt. At least we'll know if it's a matter of having no confidence in Peters

Although Peters played better than anyone ever expected, it was clear by our teams body language and their play that they had zero confidence in him. Peters needs a little rest anyway, start Murphy.

Didn't watch anything but maybe 5 minutes of the Clemson game, didn't watch the Canes game.

Been too busy trying to get all the offline achievements for GTA 5.

No worries. We'll have DiPietro signed by tuesday. ;) ;)

I don't even understand why we signed him to a tryout contract. I don't even think the guy has knees anymore. Haven't we seen enough injury prone goaltenders? I don't get this organization. The only thing DiPietro has going for him is that he is not Justin Peters. Murphy is a better option than him.

Pretty sure NHL teams can't sign someone to a PTO contract, so yes, that's entirely Charlotte on that one.

So are we in full Play bad for Ekblad/Play like crap again for Kapanen mode yet?

Naw, Muller isn't some great coach himself or anything. JR pretty much hired him on name only; it definitely wasn't due to his coaching.

Yeah, Rutherford is good for that.

Jordan Staal, Brett Sutter, Jared Staal, Brody Sutter

5 goals in 5 games, all losses. I think the problem is pretty evident.

Why even go there? We all know the drill by now.

Be terrible, out of the playoffs and in the running for the 1st OA pick in the draft by December/January. Team pulls it's head out of it's ass and starts winning enough games (usually against back-up goalies) just in time to pick somewhere between 5-10 in the draft.:sarcasm:

Crap again for Kapanen is brilliant. If there's any way to get a Kapanen back on the Hurricanes, you know Rutherford is at half-mast just thinking about it.

I think it would be prudent to wait until Khudobin comes back before we do that. Let's not forget, they did play pretty well to start the season.

4-17-1. And you can't even protect him. He'll find a way to let the puck in the net.

Its heartbreaking to watch. What do you tell peters as a coach before each game?

"you are responsible for all of our failures. look at this team's consistently awesome record with elite goalie cam ward in net. before cam got hurt this team had a -5 goal differential in 9 games, they were clearly destined for greatness"

Tuesday should be a fun game to watch at least - it'll either be a 12-11 goalfest, or a 0-0 offensive graveyard that they will have to call after 5 full rounds of Shootout. In fact, I'll bet they change NHL rules mid-Shootout just so one of CAR or PHI score a goal.

And even then it'll take another 5 shooters before one goes in the net.
