Marner is a high-risk player, if you want a mediocre player and take away his best attribute which is his creativity, I think you start benching him for being creative.

Also probably has the puck more than anyone else.

Cooper sat Kucherov. Point and Stamkos on bench for the entire period because they sucked the first 2 periods.

Leafs do not have any accountability

benching during the game is a fairly reasonable and impactful statement by a coach for poor play. and it makes everyone actually take note while they pick up the slack that game for the missing player.

Keefe is playing at making players accountable for their poor play.

"Sit a 4th liner so the stars will get the message" is about the most spineless move a coach can make, especially if the player is not dressing because of one bad play in a game filled with them.

But I get it, Sheldon knows his role and who wears the pants in that locker. And he's about 6th on that depth chart.

I believe that if Keefe told one of the stars he's sitting them for a game as punishment/whatever, the second word got to the suits at MLSE they'd remind him in about 5 seconds flat and in very specific terms if his place and that would be the end of that idea.
