Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Looks like Rantanen was just a product of MacKinnon

All his adv stats are way way way better than with the Avs, based on them he’s dominated plenty which was used against him earlier with the Avs

Carolina just has looked pretty awfull the last couple of weeks, not exactly the best window to sell the team and future to Rantanen

They gambled that a Finnish guy would sign on a team with other Finnish guys and they didn't want to sign Necas anyway.
It's not that they didn't want to sign Necas longterm it's that there was a strained relationship for a long time with him.

There was a good amount of consistency issues and playing a game that fit into the Hurricanes system. Every RFA contract negotiation was difficult on both sides and Necas has made it known that he wanted to play C which wasn't going to happen based on his skill set and style of play.

The team and him came to an agreement on a short 2 year deal that walked him to free agency. He wasn't likely to re-sign once he had the rest of the league open to him so they wanted to move him while his value was at his highest.

Agree with others that it probably would have been best to wait until the offseason and re-evaluate but opportunities to get players of Rantanen's caliber doesn't almost ever come up so they went for it with a lot of risks attached and now they have to figure out the best path forward.

Yeah I'm well versed on the backstory from reading here and online, I'm just saying with all that context they didn't want to sign him. Or maybe the better phrase was that he wasn't going to be back.

Correct. They knew Necas wasn't going to be a Hurricane once he was UFA eligible. He's a great player and they would happily sign him to a long term deal but not on his terms.

I just think the wording of 'Canes didn't want him' isn't really accurate of the situation. It was always more on Necas and that's fine. He's allow to want what he wants.

Canes are leaking this to try and put pressure on him to sign. If they go on a run and he does well he holds all the cards come FA. There's no way his agent would be advising him to sign a deal before the deadline.

What pressure is on him exactly? "Oh you don't want to be here long term so we'll trade you?"

Don't threaten him with a good time..

Rantanen for Lafrenière?

Does NYR have the cap space to resign him starting next season?

Rangers were moving forward with Laf's extension in place ($7.45 per year). If he was the return and they managed to move Kreider in the summer, then that would cover the cost.

It would be a tight fit, though, with no real room to upgrade elsewhere. The Rangers need LD far more than another winger.

Based on the roster makeover to date, it looks like Drury is coveting a certain type of player. I don't think Rantanen is it.

Make sense. Was just thinking NYR is generally a destination coveted for UFA, hence diminishing the risk.

He wants to force his way to a few teams. He’s talking about signing an extension with the right team. This is a player who wants to go to UFA and field offers from maybe 3-5 teams, and take the highest offer that any of them put up (FLA, VGK, maybe NYR, TBL, DAL). He’s putting pressure on Carolina to trade him to one of them, so he can get an 8th year.

Carolina should’ve sifted this out before they made the trade. Not to say they can’t still flip him or keep him and get value the rest of the season, but clearly what they did isn’t working as intended.

There’s no possible way Carolina Gm risks guentzel 2.0… it’s a fireable offense unless a cup is won. I don’t think he wants to take that gamble.

It’s my opinion and that’s all it is, but I would highly doubt it would be anything location related. The Carolinas is one of the premier places weather wise to be in the entire country.

I guess it is solely up to him and he may have his heart set on a destination, but if all things equal, there is a hell of a lot of other places worse to be in the NHL.
OMG have you been here? It's the worst, IMO. Hot and humid as Hades in the summer, and just far north enough to have chilly, wet winters and occasional snow. Fall is great, spring too if you don't mind pine pollen as thick as mustard gas.

And the storms. My god the storms. Hurricanes. Nor'eastas. Floods. Mountains and coast are great tho.
