Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Aho isnt a great center. He's on the same tier as a Barzal IMO. He's amazing but not able to carry you to a championship. He'll beat the islanders and devils in a playoff round, but he isnt getting you past the Rangers or Panthers
LOL you so sure the Rags are even getting in? Funny.

Talking to some people somewhat in the know here (Winnipeg), a deal around Ehlers + 1st (and a minor plus) for Rantanen is something the Jets are trying to get done. Gets Carolina a replacement player and some futures.

Personally I don't see it since I doubt Rantanen re-signs here, but if Ehlers walks anyway thats at least a nice playoff upgrade

Why would they give up a 1st? Ehlers should be plenty enough, along with some lesser pick. Carolina should be thrilled if Ehlers is on the table, because I doubt they will get an offer with another player of that caliber.

Wonder if this is just about getting the most money for Rantanen or he does not think that the Canes are a good fit for him long term? But outside of the Avs, is there really any team he would know he is a better fit for?

I am pretty sure teams will be happy to hand over assets to the Canes if they know that he will be willing to sign long term there. That could be the best case scenario for both the Canes and Rantanen. However, if this is just about money, it sucks for the Canes.

For a few months who cares where you play if you go on a playoff run looking good. Cash elsewhere.

There's a big gap between Ehlers and Rantanen

My understanding is they negotiated hard and only caved in the last few days. Guentzel went to free agency. Simple as that.

Byfield with his contract is worth more than Rantanen.

There's no way I'd do that as LA.

There is no universe where a 45 point player like Byfield is worth more than Rantanen. I don't care about age or contract.

Yeah, Rantanen is a playoff beast while Ehlers has been, let's just say, snake bitten in the playoffs.

true longterm, but not so big a gap if they are both valued as strict rentals and both teams are losing the player they trade this summer.

if the jets know they have lost ehlers it makes sense with an add from the jet and the canes can take a crack at him and try and salvage something. anything.

How so? They're basically the same age, one player is a game breaker that can carry a line, the other is a 2nd line passenger. There's still a gap in value even if it's just for a playoff run

Just trade him for some picks. Give a first and a 4th to us for Zucker. You replaced his production and still get a great rental to go for the cup.

Hmmmm. I’d a

Hmmm, I’d actually say we have proof of the opposite.

Rants has not displayed he can drive a line since being away from Mac and Cale.

Ehlers drives the second line completely.

Playoffs are a different story, regardless your description is pretty inaccurate.

That being said Rants is still >> Ehlers. I think 2 arrows is the right number.

They are; it's been widely reported Carolina made an 8 year offer over $100M total (at least $12.5 AAV). The question is whether Rantanen is ready to commit to 8 years in Raleigh after such a short time here.

right. he needs more time to decide about raleigh or he'll have no choice but to move on to another city without ever living in it for 5 minutes. nothing personal to raleigh. great city. he just has not had enough time to get used to the place.

Rantanen could carry a 2nd line in Colorado when Mac was on the other line. I could see the Jets keeping the top line together and putting Perfetti and Rantanen together on line 2.

Ehlers also hasn't done anything in the playoffs, thats where the real upgrade is

the value of the gap between rantenan and ehlers both signed to reasonable deals for 5 years is bigger than the value between them both as 3 month rentals valued with no expectation of re-signing.

Either Pagnotta, or CJ/LeBrun is wrong. Because the latter two have said that Carolina has not allowed other teams to talk with Rantanen.

Wouldn't Rantanen still gets the most money if Carolina offers anything near market value, just due to the extra (8th) year? If the Canes offer $12m per for 8 seasons, that's $96m, so for another team to match that in 7 years, they would have to offer something close to $14m per for 7 years.

The Canes had reportedly already offered $100m, so for another team to beat it they will have to offer over $14.2m, that's a lot especially since Rantanen hasn't been as productive away from MacK and Makar.

In what world is Ehlers a passenger on his line with Namestnikov and Perfetti?
