Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Who is he going to play with in LA? He needs a star to play with to produce. LA will have another PLD on their hands if they trade for Rantanen and give up roster players for him.

I'd say probably Byfield. If I was LA, I'd try to pair Byfield and Rantanen together and build the forward core around those two.

From the Leafs considering Rantanen is a pure rental could likely offer two firsts, Cowan, and Mcmann as a base but the canes likely want a bigger piece for right now.

I can’t imagine at this stage there’s much out there the canes could get as a remotely comparable nhl player. Would they trade him for picks/prospects?

Wonder if Anaheim would be a good fit . They need a quantity for quality type move. Assuming Rantanen would be resign being in cali

Zegras, Terry or Vatrano, 1st and prospect (Luneau)?

Although he had a rough night last night, I would have to think Woll (as part of a package) would have interest to Carolina.

Canes seem to be a little bit screwed on this one, but it could be a blessing in disguise that they don't sign him to 100M+ contract. No team is going to give a lot for Rantanen, given his poor showing away from Mackinnon, and his desire to be a FA in the summer.

There's plenty of data from his time with the Avs that proves he's pretty damn effective without MacKinnon as well. The last two years, he has been more dependant on MacKinnon. I would have to imagine that teams are not just basing their offers based on this one month run with the Canes, where the team overall has been very mediocre. Even if it's true and Rantanen is trending downwards and needs another star player to play with, you give him that and he will put up a 100 points.

Is there something in a potential Rantanen Boeser swap?
I feel like this is more like a 3 team deal or a pair of deals where Carolina gets assets for Rantanen and then trades for Boeser. But if Vancouver is interested in Boeser+ for Rantanen I can see it happening. With the cap space Carolina has this offseason they could make Boeser an lower offer than Rantanen that still would be hard to turn down.

Aho isn't good enough? Slavin isn't good enough on the breakouts? I mean, are you saying he needs to play with McDavid, Matthews, Kucherov, or Barkov to be effective?

Maybe it's the system of Carolina that doesn't fit him. Or, maybe it does eventually and it just takes time. It has been 12 f***ing games. If you are ready to write him off based on that, be my guest.

Genius move by the Hurricanes to trade away their 2nd best player from their roster for a guy who doesn't fit at all, and then trade him potentially because he won't get an insane payday and want to be in Carolina

10/10 general managing, would give them their GM of the year award to a dude who does computer work
