Especially since I think Dallas will play Colorado in the first round. The pure joy we would all have to watch Rantanen score the series winning goal against them…along with a bunch of other goals he scores on them.

Mush seems to be tight with a lot of guys, especially Otter and Duchene.

It’s a business sure, but that move may bother some guys.

I don't know what to feel about this but I think I don't want it to happen. So I will know spew a bunch of thoughts I have on the situation

To get him, I imagine we have to move Mav or Stank and I really feel moving them out will royally screw up our cap situation in the next couple years. I feel like if we move one of them it has to be for a cost controlled defensemen of similar quality.

Next problem is, do we intend to extend him? I would be hesitant because you're paying for his production along side Mackinnon and it seems unlikely he lives up to that paying with Hintz or Wyatt. Also, if we extend him, who moves out? Robo?

Just feels like if we get him, it absolutely makes us better for this run (unless we trade away Robo, see next paragraph for my thoughts on that) but hurts us in the future. We would essentially lose Mav now and Robo (although we would recoup some assets moving Robo out) later to massively upgrade the team for this playoff run.

Then the other possibility is moving Robo for Rantanen. Right now, that is a downgrade, is it not? Robo has hit his stride and producing at what? a top 5 rate in this calendar year. I know Rantanen has not done that. Add to that, Hintz has been producing very well lately and I am sure some of that has to do with Robo. Who knows if Hintz gels with Rantanen, being countrymen guarantees nothing.

All that said, if we trade for him, I will be even more excited for this upcoming run.

Wouldn't surprise me if Nill is just offering a boatload of non-roster players/picks and he'd be coming as a pure rental

But who knows at this point

I imagine there's several teams VERY in on Rantanen, but it's nice to hear that from our side at least

I can't see us beating other offers but who knows I guess
I think what we don't know is whether he'll talk extension. If he doesn't want to sign an extension with anyone, then the offers are all remaining in the same ballpark of rental territory.

Remember, teams can no longer make trades with extension-related conditions. Nill created that option, and the league shut it down.

If you extend rantanen you can move Robertson for someone like Dobson. Yes you will have to extend him but the cap is going up and there are guys coming off the books that can be let go.

I personally don’t think Nill will pull the trigger on Rantanen. I think it will cost stankoven and 1st and probably a prospect. That seems too much for Nill for a rental. Who knows if he will resign here.

Im usually that one annoying guy who chastises posters for lowballing. gut feeling on rantanen is he might get sent out of Carolina for cheap because the assumption is that its a pure rental. Teams that are in the market for him wouldnt be able to afford to resign him. I also don't know how much of a reputational hit his terrible stint in Carolina will affect perceptions of him as a player.

I could see him going for not much(mid spec + pick)because Carolina want to just get something. but i can also see someone overpaying(nilll wouldnt).

is this a case of, i can't get another d man, so we're going to try to outscore our problems? that just never seems to work
Normally I agree but this Dcore is good enough imo, and if no deal can be made to make it go from good to great, why not add to your already strong forward group if an opportunity presents itself.

We have the space

it is kinda wild to me that it can come off like posters are more willing to move Robertson than stank or borque.

high demand = high cost

We’re like 3rd in goals against and have the number 1 pk. I think we’ll be fine ;)

this is true. i'm just thinking of the war of attrition in the playoffs. we can't go back to running 5 d men out there where one of them is dumba or those pretty stats will fall apart

If you are correct I don't get why Carolina would move him for that return. If they get mediocre offers then they can keep him for their playoff run. They're still trying to win afterall.

You would be losing stank or Bourque to get rantanen. I was commenting on how he would fit in long term. It would allow Dallas to trade Robertson for a top 4 RHD like Dobson. Not saying they would move Robo but it opens the door. Especially with his rumored contract demands not being good.

Yea im just trying decern if demand is because of low price and perceived value.

I think back to the tanev trade. he went for a 2nd and a pretty low end spec when he was the most hyped d rental on the market last year. I think when teams dont think they can sign guys the price can sometimes drop pretty precipitously. This is a point with rentals where im always unsure about.

yea my point is that seems seem to really soured for him in carolina. The fact that they are entertaining offers is wild to begin with.
