It was a pretty optimistic trade in that regard TBH. Rantanen basically had 1 month to decide if he wants to spend the next 8 years of his career in Raleigh. Probably could've happened if him and the team would've had a great run here, but it's been very meh so understandably there is hesitation.

This is just a wrong take. It's not all about the money, it's about the fit as well. And it hasn't been a perfect fit so far, so understandably he's not eager to sign yet.

What's realistic for "Rental Rantanen"
What's realistic for "signed and trade Rantanen" from Tor/LA?

I imagine it's massive if he's signed. Bigger than Tkachuk from Calgary.

A swap of Marner, but I have to imagine they're going to off Cowan and the leafs have their 1st this year and whatever else is involved the canes can turn those assets plus their own and get a player with term from a seller.

I doubt he'll sign anywhere by Friday, so it seems like it'll fall closer in line with a rental

A few years back Giroux got a 1st + Tippett + a 3rd. Rantanen is better than him so he will likely get more but that's the type of package to expect

I think he would still be in Colorado if 8x12.5 was offered there.

I think he's big time hunting. Even 14x7 is 98. He probably can get another year after for millions and make more. + He gets to pick his location.

What’s Rantanen without McKinnon? I’m wondering if Carolina knows something about the player as a line driver that makes them want to trade him? This might be a trade that’s okay for a rental price but there will be buyer’s remorse if the cost is too high.

Not at all, because Tkachuk was an RFA. Rantanen is a UFA, and any team could sign him without any asset cost in 4 months (should he get to free agency).

If Carolina is trading Rantanen, it's just because they don't want to lose him in free agency. Carolina has had the 100ish million dollar offer on the table all this time.

+ the fact that they couldn't re-sign Guentzel as well during the off-season. Pure shit show lately and really embarrassing. It blows.

LA is infact interested in Rantanen. I'd even be willing to do Byfield for Rantanen. But I think they offer a package around Turcotte.

Who is he going to play with in LA? He needs a star to play with to produce. LA will have another PLD on their hands if they trade for Rantanen and give up roster players for him.

It will be really tough to have Marner and Rantanen on the same team, as well as Matthews and Nylander. I think Treliving is waiting to see how they do in the playoffs before deciding on Marner. If the Leafs disappoint again, this is the summer to break up the Core 4.

Agreed. I don’t see Rantanen as a guy Treliving will go for until the offseason. Too costly to acquire right now for a rental.

Forgot about that. But Canes are only team that can offer him that 8th year. So the sign & trade has to have some bigger value than just rental.

Turcotte doesn't get anywhere close to Rantanen unless he's the kicker in the trade, not the main piece.

I just don't see it happening in this timeframe. Mikko and his agent would have to be on board with this, and negotiate with the acquiring team. And let's say Mikko agrees that he would love to sign in LA. Well what is the incentive for LA to pay extra, when they now know Mikko is willing to sign there for 7 years in July, and they don't have to pay a dime for the Hurricanes to do that?

It just doesn't work in this timeframe.
