Rumor: Hurricanes could look to flip Rantanen if he doesn’t extend by the deadline

Would a team pay more than Lundell and Samoskevich to get him as a rental? Personally I don't think so.

You could probably get more of a futures-oriented package (a couple 1st round picks, a top-end prospect), but what good does that for the Hurricanes who want to win now?
I think the basis for a deal is there but I would take out Kotkaniemi and look at value purely for an extended Rantanen.

It was on mentioned on Sportsnet yesterday but this is a bit close.

dont see us trading lundell cause that opens a gap in center for us and Lundell is bascially a 2C

Only trade i see is CV but hed have to waive his NMC and we dont have a lot of cap space to resign some core pieces with a rantanen deal assuming its 10m+

Since we have no first rounders till 2050 giving up one of our last good prospects would be a huge gamble
CV doesn't have a NMC until next season. It would be doing him dirty though to trade before his extension kicks in.

The thing I'm finding most amusing is that somehow all Carolina fans "knew" that Necas wasn't signing another contract with them - lol no you f***ing didn't - if it was public knowledge that he wanted out, he never would've garnered a player of Rantanen's calibre in return. Necas had a great start and never once did you hear a peep from fans that he wasn't returning

I'd thought it was a great value trade, but its going south in a hurry for the Hurricanes, and the revisionist history from fans makes it tough to empathize

Cans:

Rakell
Rangers 1st
Poulin

For

Pens:

Rantanen

Canes gets a player that can actually be on their roster for a couple more seasons. And can be 30-40 goal scorer. Plus they save face by getting a first in return.

Pens take the risk of Rantanen not returning, but Crosby gets marquee winger and the superstar they’ll need after the trio is finished. Yes, again risky, but they need to take it. That 14-21 overall pick though necessary, is not in Crosby’s 2 year plan
No.

I have said though the Pens could send Rakell to the Canes in some 3 way deal.

They get Rakell +

Pens gets futures

Insert 3rd team gets Rantanen

I wouldn't count Vegas out. If they can find a way to land another big fish McCrimmon will do it. Rantanen in Vegas instantly makes them the favourite from the West.

It still boggles my mind how the Canes traded away Necas for a player that didn't have an extension in place, especially having Necas still under contract till 2026 (thus being able to eventually delay and deal him away this summer). And this all happening after already getting burned last year with Guentzel.

If LA isn't all over this that would be a huge mistake, they need a superstar and are in a destination that would probably attract him into re-signing.

Pretty horrid mismanagement by the canes but I do respect their willingness to try to fix some of the glaring weaknesses of their roster, I'd be stunned if they flip him - Canes are far from cup favorites but this year feels more open than any in recent memory.

It's called desperation. Even with Rantanen, Carolina isn't a contender without a legit starter.

LA is infact interested in Rantanen. I'd even be willing to do Byfield for Rantanen. But I think they offer a package around Turcotte.

Right. This whole "flipping" Rantanen makes no sense. OK, they made a big swap hoping for an extension but they'll deal with the fallout in the offseason if it doesn't materialize and he leaves...last I checked you still have the 2025 playoffs where they could easily come out of the East. I don't buy any of this.
