Does Dundon still not do big signing bonuses?

Money now >>>>>>> money later so maybe signing bonus is an issue here?

He doesn't appear to be a fit in Carolina. Sucks for Carolina now need to try and get what they can from him. I’m not really what value is for a rental. But it’s not going to make up for losing necas no matter what trade they do.

steamy nothingburger from dredger

"it's too soon to say" so he just frames standard negotiations as uncertainty to stir the pot

Yup. More brilliant insight.

“Canes are talking to Rantanen about an extension. Rantanen is unsure at this point having barely been with his new team since the trade. He may or may not be willing to sign. The team may be willing to trade him if he doesn’t.

It’s too soon to say anything. But I’m gonna say all this anyways.”

Let’s get real here. There is no actual reporting going on.

This speculation overdrive is based on Rantanen shooting 4% as he settles into his new team.

If he has 4 goals and 9 points in 7 games, which would be not out of range for his shot creation in Carolina thus far - almost all of this noise would go away.

People see 3 points in 7 games and assume that everything is terrible, Mikko hates it there and thus we get all of these Twitter posts about “the buzz I’m speculating is that Rantanen may not be happy - but it’s too soon to actually say that.”

That’s literally what this is.

Yeah of course if his production was tripled people would have a different opinion of the situation... That is kind of a given.

Sure, he’d be great. But what’s the cost to acquire?
Cowan + 1st + Minten would probably be the ask if it was Toronto who was interested.

Then again Carolina is also in win now mode, so that doesn't really help them. Probably ends up being a hockey trade 1 for 1.

Maybe to Vancouver ? Boeser + 1st + a little

Imo for any club to pay a high cost to acquire Rantanen there would need to be an agreed extension. Have the Canes allowed other clubs go talk to Rantanen’s representatives?

Much like Deniro with Sharon Stone in Casino, I don’t see how the union of Carolina and Rantanen can work out because he wants to be free and they can’t trust him with the ransom
Mackinnon is James Woods and Aho is Pesci

Montreal is a fantastic hockey market with knowledgeable and interested fans. Carolina is not a hockey market. Where would hockey even rank there? 7 or 8?
Funny how that works. The Canes are a great organization delivering constantly competitive hockey for their fans, yet they prefer following the Hornets or the Panthers eternal dumpster fires.

I think you're conflating Raleigh and Charlotte here.

Panthers are largely getting generic NFL support but are more a hate watch these days for anyone who follows them.

And no one in the Triangle watches the Hornets. At all. You'd be better off making the college sports argument than claiming people prefer the Hornets.

He looked brutal on Saturday. Even Craig Simpson said there were times he looked dis interested. Maybe he just doesn’t want to be there

He wants to get paid.
Yep.
I’m thinking about it from Rantanen’s point of view. You kind of got blindsided about the trade. You were hoping to re-sign, you’re not in a market that is on your top 5. You’re a few months from being able to pick your destination for the next decade why sign in Carolina? He didn’t even ask to be traded
Yep he can go anywhere no loyalty.
after you paid up for him might as well try to win
Agreed. Arguably the best player on there team after Slavvin?
Yea still shocked at that contract. What a steal.

That literally isn't.

The canes acquired him and hope to sign him and sounds like they've already sent out their best offer to him, so now they're weighing the options of keeping him for the playoffs and up until July 1st to see if they can sign him, or they're going to try to recoup whatever losses they can and go in a different direction.

There's been nothing said about the lack of production on the ice, except for around here.

I think if Rantanen goes to Vancouver, Demko would be the centrepiece.

Carolina has been a bit of a bride’s maid for a few years now; they are amongst the best in the league in the regular season but they always disappoint in the postseason. They finally went for it a bit last year with Guentzel. Unless a great trade is out there for Rantanen, they should keep him as a rental and go for it. If they don’t have any Finals appearances during this era, it has to be seen as an underachievement.

yeah, because they lack star power. You can't win this league without star power. They have an extremely good team with good-great players playing roles really well, but when push comes to shove they lack the star power to get that toe over the line. Rantanen was supposed to be that guy ( he still can, but each day that goes by the closer we get to the trade deadline without him re-signing is big risk because if he walks on july 1st theres no way the GM can keep his job) but hes running out of time and appears to not be gelling with the team and play style.

I guess what blows my mind, is why didn’t they ask him? Why was rantanen blind sided? It’s not like he could have blocked it. Why not.

Listen there is 0% chance we are taking this number. Here is our offer. If you don’t want it, we are trading you.

Then if he says no…. Ask him if he wants to negotiate with a team.

I get if avs saw a package they liked. But wouldn’t they at least give him an ultimatum?

And wouldn’t Carolina want him to sign ?before giving up necas?

Whole thing makes no sense.

I don’t think Colorado was concerned with Rantanen’s future once they had that offer for Necas on the table from Carolina.

It was very risky on Carolina’s part to trade for him without some form of commitment for Rantanen to stay there. Maybe they thought having Finnish guys like Aho or Kotkaniemi would help the transition?
