That‘s the issue…otherwise Aho would still be playing as a winger. How many 1Cs are in the league by that criteria?
With Guetzel they just waiting to long to meet his ask. By the time they offered him the 8x8 he was asking for he already knew what he’d get from Tampa and i guess decided the same amount (or slightly less) over 7 years plus the tax situation appealed. And obviously the talent he’d get to play with.I'd love to ask Jake and Mikko what the deal is with not wanting to resign in Carolina. On paper, you'd think it'd be a great place to settle long-term. An overall good roster, very healthy prospect pool, good head coach, you get a quality 1C, the city is nice, the media isn't crazy...seems like the ideal place to sign a $14mil/yr deal to play hockey.
Who has the room next year to take him on? And who is willing to give up what it takes? Couple random thoughts:
Rantanen+Kotkaniemi+Andersen for Pettersson+Demko
Rantanen for Huberdeau, then Calgary flips him to the highest bidder before the TDL.
Rantanen for Robertson. Risky for Dallas, IMHO but that's in the mold of Necas+ for Rantanen
Vancouver and Dallas could easily resign him next year.
I suspect his agent was looking for the biggest number possible and figured he wouldn't get dealt by a playoff team.I guess what blows my mind, is why didn’t they ask him? Why was rantanen blind sided? It’s not like he could have blocked it. Why not.
Maybe he just doesn't like Nascar/Trump country. It’s my opinion and that’s all it is, but I would highly doubt it would be anything location related. The Carolinas is one of the premier places weather wise to be in the entire country.

The real negotiation was supposed to be later on, at which point Rantanen could have pressured his agent into taking Colorado's best offer.
Maybe the gap between the offer and the ask seemed insurmountable, and the agent thought they were still in the posturing phase, so he wouldn't compromise, and the team doesn't want to talk about a trade until its done. I mean, suggest to a player he might be traded, and his play suffers. Why risk his play suffering (if a deal falls through) if it seems like the gap is just too big anyways?Yes but why if you are Colorado wouldn’t you make it clear?
Listen. This is our final offer. If you don’t sign then we are trading you.
Why not see if he takes it? It makes no sense not to make yourself clear. He couldn’t block it.
We offer you Jack Drury and Jonathan Drouin.Colorado could do the funniest thing.
I really hate your team when it comes to attracting super stars lol let other teams have a chance!Welcome to Tampa Mikko

Who's the last superstar besides Guentzel that Tampa has attracted as a UFA?I really hate your team when it comes to attracting super stars lol let other teams have a chance!

He's gone from Carolina. Just depends on if they keep him as a rental.Sure sounds like Rantanen wants to go to free agency. I wonder if the Canes will allow any potential trading partner to talk with Rantanen before any trade? If he’s purely a rental at the TDL then his value drops, right?
