I'd love to ask Jake and Mikko what the deal is with not wanting to resign in Carolina. On paper, you'd think it'd be a great place to settle long-term. An overall good roster, very healthy prospect pool, good head coach, you get a quality 1C, the city is nice, the media isn't crazy...seems like the ideal place to sign a $14mil/yr deal to play hockey.

Who has the room next year to take him on? And who is willing to give up what it takes? Couple random thoughts:

Rantanen+Kotkaniemi+Andersen for Pettersson+Demko
Rantanen for Huberdeau, then Calgary flips him to the highest bidder before the TDL.
Rantanen for Robertson. Risky for Dallas, IMHO but that's in the mold of Necas+ for Rantanen

Vancouver and Dallas could easily resign him next year.
With Guetzel they just waiting to long to meet his ask. By the time they offered him the 8x8 he was asking for he already knew what he’d get from Tampa and i guess decided the same amount (or slightly less) over 7 years plus the tax situation appealed. And obviously the talent he’d get to play with.

I guess what blows my mind, is why didn’t they ask him? Why was rantanen blind sided? It’s not like he could have blocked it. Why not.
I suspect his agent was looking for the biggest number possible and figured he wouldn't get dealt by a playoff team.

The real negotiation was supposed to be later on, at which point Rantanen could have pressured his agent into taking Colorado's best offer.

It’s my opinion and that’s all it is, but I would highly doubt it would be anything location related. The Carolinas is one of the premier places weather wise to be in the entire country.
Maybe he just doesn't like Nascar/Trump country.

Wasn't it Dougie Hamilton who also wasn't a fit ? It happens.

Yes but why if you are Colorado wouldn’t you make it clear?

Listen. This is our final offer. If you don’t sign then we are trading you.

Why not see if he takes it? It makes no sense not to make yourself clear. He couldn’t block it.

Maybe the gap between the offer and the ask seemed insurmountable, and the agent thought they were still in the posturing phase, so he wouldn't compromise, and the team doesn't want to talk about a trade until its done. I mean, suggest to a player he might be traded, and his play suffers. Why risk his play suffering (if a deal falls through) if it seems like the gap is just too big anyways?

This would be an incredible miscalculation for a team that has a solid shot to win the Cup. I don't see how you flip him.. Walking after the season would be more palatable I would think. They knew they only had one more year of Necas before he walked anyway.

Hurricanes have made some dumb moves in the past (KK offersheet and subsequent re-signing to a bloated contract). But trading Rants a month later would take the cake...

Boy did they get fleeced.

I would rather keep him and try for the cup for 1 playoff.
Trading him away weeks after getting him (plus giving up Necas for him) would be quite the fumble and really hurts the teams cup window.

Sure sounds like Rantanen wants to go to free agency. I wonder if the Canes will allow any potential trading partner to talk with Rantanen before any trade? If he’s purely a rental at the TDL then his value drops, right?
He's gone from Carolina. Just depends on if they keep him as a rental.

Very interesting what they decide to do.
