Any clue why he suddenly decided to completely change philosophy on team building from speed, skill and quickly advancing the puck?

Most of JR's acquisitions of late have been the antithesis to that team building philosophy.

Not a clue. That's a question that will haunt us for the rest of our lives.

EDIT: One thing I can say . . . the toughness kick was a direct result of the beating Sid and Geno took in the cup years (and Geno having to be de facto team tough guy). They both were tired of it, from my understanding of things. BUT, that doesn't explain the shift away from a defense with multiple defensemen who could reliably move the puck quickly and accurately and on players in general who, if they weren't fast, at least played fast.

Get Schultz back and trade a 1st+ Maata for an upgrade at D and suddenly the defense can become a strength.

I think you have to relieve Martin first and see how that shakes out. Our problems are in the dzone and in transition.

All the same issues since '17 when they altered their style because Letang was injured and we weren't as good in transition.

There are teams with worse d-corps than ours who are better at transitioning.

Even then, our forwards have zero idea of where the other forwards are supposed to be coming through the NZ. They run into each other all the time, and their passes to one another are like 3 feet off. So it's not just our dmen.

What's interesting about this game - is that even though the Pens' managed not to score a goal (nor get a shot on goal for the first 9 minutes of the third period) - the defense stood out as being the worst aspect of the team. THAT'S saying something pretty awful.

On that note, outside of Sid's line we were absolutely abysmal on offense tonight. Pearson looks to be trying to supplant Brassard as the most useless Penguin forward in years.
